The Halloween holiday is upon us and at Atwoods even the pets are getting in on the fun.
Atwoods held its 10th annual pet costume contest at the Enid store at Garriott and Garland Sunday afternoon.
“Everybody worked hard and we had nice animals,” said Pauline Jones, head of Atwoods’ pet department and an admitted animal lover.
“They were cute, easy to handle, fun and laid back,” she said.
Thirty-eight animals were entered in the competition, from Pomeranians to kittens to horses.
Pets were entered in three categories, under 20 pounds, 20-100 pounds and over 100 pounds.
In the under 20-pound category, winners were:
1. A Pomeranian named Gizmo, dressed as a skeleton. Gizmo is owned by Ethan Wolbert.
2. Sheba, an English bulldog, owned by Amber Alcorn.
3. A tabby kitten named Sunset, owned by Brooklyn Waddly.
In the 20-100 pound category, winners were:
1. King Rock court, a pair of black Labradors with a retriever puppy as the king, owned by Barbara Leher.
2. Sir Paycheck, a boxer, owner’s name unknown.
3. Honda, a chocolate lab dressed as a basketball player. Honda is owned by Tabitha Ackinson.
Over 100 pound winners were:
1. Maggie, an Arab mare, owned by Lynne Neveu. Maggie also was named grand champion.
2. A pair of horses, dressed as bride and groom. The horses, Zip and Blossom are owned by Megan Brooks and Michelle Dunn.
3. Jet, Shetland pony, owned by Judith Duff.
The Manager’s Choice award was won by Baby, a rescue dog owned by Donica Hughes.
“There seemed to be more animals and more people this year,” Jones said.
Atwoods and its business partners and Animal Health sent a number of gifts, she said. “They were healthy, happy-looking animals,” she said.
