Egg harvesting ban faces uncertain future

From The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — The author of legislation that would make it illegal for a woman to sell her eggs says the bill faces an uncertain future in the Oklahoma Senate.

Rep. Rebecca Hamilton of Oklahoma City appeared with anti-abortion activists Wednesday in an attempt to breathe new life into the bill, which was overwhelmingly approved by the state House last month.

Hamilton says the measure is in the Senate Approriations Committee but may not get a hearing. She says some senators are concerned about opponents’ claims that it could jeopardize state fertility clinics.

Hamilton says paying a woman for her eggs is unethical. Mike Jestes of the Oklahoma Family Policy Council says the bill will stop the exploitation of women.

The bill does not prohibit a woman from donating her eggs.
