Marlow man found dead in pond

DUNCAN, Okla. — Chelsey Turner, an 83-year-old Marlow resident, was found dead Friday, Jan. 4, evening on his land in the northeastern region of Stephens County.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for help about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Sheriff Wayne McKinney said according to Turner’s son, Turner had gone out some time Friday afternoon to take care of his cattle. When he still had not returned by about 7:30 p.m., a relative sent to check on Turner found him dead, waist deep in a pond.

McKinney said Turner had been trying to break the ice on the pond for his cattle, slipped on the muddy bank and fell into the pond.

“The bank is steep where he (was) and he could not pull himself out,” McKinney said.

The medical examiner will be performing an autopsy before the official cause of death is determined, but it is not believed that the man drowned.

“I think he fell in and died from hypothermia or a stress-induced heart attack,” McKinney said.

Further details will be available upon completion of an investigation and autopsy. Turner lived at 609 W. Comanche in Marlow.
