Geoscientists to debate hydraulic fracturing

TULSA — Two geoscientists will debate the contentious energy drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing at a public event in Tulsa.

Tuesday’s moderated discussion at the University of Tulsa will feature scientists David Hughes and Terry Engelder. Hughes is president of Global Sustainability Research, Inc. and has studied Canada’s energy resources for nearly 40 years.

Engelder is a professor in the geosciences department at Penn State University and has previously served on the staffs of the U.S. Geological Survey, Texaco and Columbia University.

The debate is part of the fourth-annual Chesapeake Energy Lecture and is presented by the TU College of Law and the National Energy Policy Institute.

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” is a highly debated drilling method that uses water, sand and other additives to free natural gas underground.
