House votes to enhance trafficking investigations

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a bill intended to strengthen the state drug enforcement bureau's powers in its investigations of human trafficking and money laundering.

The bill by Republican Rep. Pam Peterson would allow the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs to serve subpoenas on witnesses and evidence in its investigation of those crimes. The Housed passed the bill Tuesday.

Peterson was not available for comment after the day's session.

The bill's passage comes as legislators and law enforcement officers across the country increasingly focus on battling labor and sex trafficking. Oklahoma's Legislature is currently considering at least five other human trafficking-related proposals.

The bill now moves to the state Senate.
