Oklahoma man accused in killing to appear in court

OKLAHOMA CITY — A hearing is set in Garvin County for an Elmore City man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend.

Prosecutors allege Justin Hammer killed Brandon Duran on Aug. 7, then dismembered the body and put it in cement-filled buckets that were thrown into a pond on Hammer’s property.

Hammer has pleaded not guilty. Records indicate Hammer told investigators he killed Duran after Duran forced his way into his home and threatened him.

Defense attorney Irven Box said Friday’s hearing is to announce Hammer has an attorney and to determine whether Hammer will ask for a preliminary hearing.

A preliminary hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence to order Hammer to trial on the murder charge.
