Bill would exempt Okla. guns from federal rules

OKLAHOMA CITY — Guns and ammunition made in Oklahoma would not be subject to federal laws or regulations under a bill that has been approved by a House panel.

The so-called Firearms Freedom Act was one of two of gun bills passed Wednesday by the House Public Safety Committee. Another bill that sailed through the committee would allow private schools to develop their own rules and regulations on whether teachers and visitors to the school could be armed.

Both measures now proceed to the House Calendar Committee, which will determine whether the bills will be scheduled for a vote in the full House.

Hominy Republican Rep. Sean Roberts, who sponsored the Firearms Freedom Act, says it is designed to ensure the federal government doesn’t encroach on Oklahomans’ gun rights.
