Heaviest snowfall reported in far western Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. — The first significant winter event of the season has dropped about 5 inches of snow in western Oklahoma and led the National Weather Service to issue a winter storm warning for much of the western half of the state.

Meteorologist Ryan Barnes with the weather service in Norman says snowfall moving through the Oklahoma City metro Tuesday morning is expected to leave the area by early evening and be out of the state by early Wednesday. Barnes says the heaviest snowfall has been 5 inches recorded in Erick in far western Oklahoma and that lighter amounts are expected as the storm moves eastward.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported several auto accidents — but no serious injuries — as elevated areas and bridges and overpasses became slick because of the snow.
