ENID —
Friday was not a good day for the Enid baseball program.
First, the Plainsmen found out they have to go to defending state champion Owasso for the regional tournament next month. Midwest City and Oklahoma City U.S. Grant complete the field.
Then, Moore took advantage of eight walks, two hit batsmen and some timely hitting to beat the Plainsmen 7-5 at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Dalton Hilliard went 2-for-3 with four RBI for the Lions, including a two-run homer in the first, an RBI double in the fifth and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. He scored after back-to-back wild pitches in the fifth.
“If you walk eight and hit two, you’re not going to beat a lot of people,’’ said Plainsmen coach James Peoples. “That’s what happened tonight. It starts on the mound and it always has. The game hasn’t changed. If you walk eight, you’re going to get your butt kicked.’’
Peoples’ thoughts after the game were on today’s Centennial Conference doubleheader against Sand Springs (noon first pitch) and not the regional pairings.
“We’re worried about Sand Springs,’’ Peoples said. “We have a full week next week. We’ll get to the regionals in a couple of weeks.’’
Owasso canceled a scheduled game with the Plainsmen Thursday at David Allen.
The Lions had only five hits but three were for extra bases. Joe Haddox had an RBI triple in the fourth. Four of Moore’s seven runs reached base on a walk, a hit batsmen or an error.
“We walked a couple and they got the key hits when they needed them,’’ Peoples said. “It’s frustrating. You can’t defend a walk.’’
The Plainsmen threatened in the seventh when Erick Ramirez and Colter LeGrant drew back-to-back walks.
However, Moore third baseman Hilliard was able to handle a hot shot by Miguel Bretado. He threw to second for the force out to end the game.
Ramirez had a two-RBI single in the fifth when the Plainsmen scored three runs to cut the Moore lead to 6-4. Seth Floyd preceded that with an RBI single.
Hilliard’s bases-loaded walk made it 7-4 in the sixth.
Enid threatened in the sixth. Bretado singled and went to second when Dillon Walker walked.
Brock Enmeier forced Bretado at third on a disputed call. Joe Phillips singled in Walker on a groundout but Brady Baugh struck out to end the inning.
Black cut the Moore lead to 4-1 in the fourth when he scored on a fielder’s choice by LeGrant.
Hilliard’s two-run homer gave Moore a 2-0 lead in the first. Haddox’s RBI triple was the Lions’ lone hit in the fourth when they scored twice to take a 4-0 lead.
Mike and Joe Phillips are scheduled to pitch against Sand Springs today. The games will start at noon. The games can be heard on KCRC (1390 AM).
The loss dropped the Plainsmen to 14-11 overall.
