ENID —
Enid’s Mike Phillips allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter but it wasn’t enough for the Plainsmen in a 2-0 loss to Edmond Memorial Thurs-day night at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Bulldogs right-hander Landon Hallam matched Phillips’ gem with a four-hitter of his own with only two walks.
The difference was the Plainsmen left seven runners on base and had Brady Baugh thrown out at the plate in the first inning.
No. 7-ranked Edmond Memorial (11-4) left only one runner on base and made the most of its opportunities, leaving only one runner on base. The Bulldogs’ two runs scored on infield outs in the first inning.
“That was the key,’’ said Enid coach James Peoples. “We couldn’t get the hits when we had runners in scoring position.’’
The Bulldogs had only three runners reach second, only one in the last six innings, but were able to make a quick power play in the first inning stand up.
Dylan Feith led off with a sharp hit off the glove and body of Enid second baseman Colter LeGrant. Drew Dahlberg followed with the game’s only extra base hit — a double off the left field fence.
Alex Hill and Dylan Reester brought in the runners on back-to-back ground outs. They had only two hits the rest of the game with Phillips retiring the last 11 hitters he faced.
“Mike pitched well enough to win,’’ Peoples said. “He went out with a bulldog mentality and filled it up and gave us a chance to win. He pitched a gem.’’
The Plainsmen did not play the infield in with runners on second and third and no outs with the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters coming up.
“You just want to keep away from the big inning,’’ Peoples said. “They did a good job to get the runs in.’’
Baugh led off the first with a walk, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice by LeGrant but was thrown out by Bulldogs center fielder Fieth, who threw a strike to the plate after catching what appeared to be a sacrifice fly by Seth Floyd.
Hallam had a no-hitter until the fourth when Brock Enmeier had the first of his two singles.
The Plainsmen threatened in the fifth when Dillon Walker singled with one out and went to second when Joe Black was hit by a pitch. Hallam got Baugh to fly out to right to end the inning.
Enid, with two outs, put runners on second and third after back-to-back singles by Enmeier and Miguel Bretado. Hallam got Erick Ramirez to fly out.
“(Hallam) did a good job,’’ Peoples said. “Their shortstop (Dahlberg) made some plays that other shortstops aren’t going to make in the hole. Their first baseman (Landon Jones) made some key plays for them ... we just couldn’t come up with the timely hit.’’
The No. 16-ranked Plainsmen dropped to 6-6 overall with the loss. They will go to Centennial Conference rival Bart-lesville for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader today and travel to Putnam City North for a 2 p.m. single game Saturday.
Bretado and Christian Lafontan will pitch for EHS today.
“We just have to get two tomorrow,’’ Peoples said. “We have a chance to bounce back. We don’t have to wait a week like football.’’
