Enid swim draws one, drops one

PONCA CITY, Okla. — PONCA CITY — The Enid High School swim team opened a taxing five-day stretch Thursday, swimming the first of three compeitive events scheduled through Monday in a duel with Ponca City.

So far, so good.

The Pacers drew even with Ponca City at 77 and the Plainsmen lost, 67-55, but the most important work was done on the qualifying board, not the scoreboard, said coach Ginny Shipley.

“I was really pleased with most of our times,” she said. “Some of them weren’t that great, but some of the kids took some significant time off. At this time of the season, that’s what we need to be doing.”

Whitney Livesay qualified for state competition in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.69 seconds in her first attempt at the event this season, while Gabe Sanchez qualified with a personal best 1:02.81 in the 100 butterfly, winning the event along the way.

Enid entered the competition already short-handed, with injured girls Sara Nazari (back) and Alyssa Shearer (leg) sitting out, and Nicki Powell and Jeremy Crise playing in the winter band concert.

“We were down a few kids,” Shipley said. “We swam well. We had seven or eight personal bests, and we won nine events, but we didn’t have the depth with so many people out to rack the points up like we normally do ... We’re doing well — our times are coming down — we just didn’t have the numbers today.”

The teams don’t have much time to rest before hitting the pool again. Enid hosts Putnam City West and North at 5 p.m. today at the Denny Price Family YMCA before opening next week with a meet Monday at Oklahoma City Community College.
