Scott claims Kelley crown

TULSA, Okla. —  Enid’s Jake Scott pinned Seth Herman in 5:21 to the 220-pound championship at the Tulsa Kelley wrestling tournament Saturday.

Billy Grothe, Enid’s other finalist, lost to Oklahoma State signee Mark Carter of Tulsa East Central 19-6 in the 126-pound final.

Zack Overbeck took third at 195 pounds, pinning Thompson of Ada in 5:25. Keegan Clayton pinned Micah of Bixby in 5:50 to take fifth at 152.

The Plainsmen were 10th overall.

Scott had three falls in the tournament. He now has 18 wins for the season.

“That was another great win for Jake,’’ said Enid assistant coach Trent Holland. “I think it really helped him for the regionals (Feb. 15-16) to compete here.’’

The Grothe-Bradley matchup was closer than the score indicated, Holland said. Grothe went 3-1 in the tournament. He has 22 wins for the season.

“Carter is pretty tough,’’ Holland said. “He pinned his way through the tournament so you know Billy wrestled him pretty tough. The score doesn’t indicate it, but Billy stayed in good position throughout the match.’’

Clayton was 3-2, raising his win total to 19.

“We had a pretty good final round,’’ Holland said. “The falls allowed us to move up to 10th (out of 22 teams). All the boys got better on their feet here. We’re going to go into regionals with a positive attitude and we’re going to be ready to roll.’’

Hank Schulz went 2-2 at 170. Clay Jacks was 0-2 at 138 as was Hunter Nixon at 160 and Andy Reyes at 182.
