Goldbugs rally past Blackwell for boys title

ENID, Okla. — Cade Pfleider led his team in overtime for the second straight night, and Alva completed a furious second-half comeback to force overtime, dominating the extra session and winning Saturday’s Wheat Capital Tournament championship against Blackwell, 43-37.

Riley Hess scored a driving layup with less than 30 seconds left to tie the game at 35 after Alva trailed by as much as 25-8 early in the third quarter, capping a 9-2 Goldbug run in the final three minutes.

Brady Bergner couldn’t inbound the ball with 5.9 seconds remaining, surrendering the last of 12 Blackwell turnovers in the third and fourth quarters, but Alva’s Cody Forell missed a desperation three at the buzzer, sending the Goldbugs into their second overtime game in as many nights.

And for the second time in the same stretch, Pfleider led Alva in the late going, scoring all of his 11 points after halftime. He scored all four of Alva’s points in an overtime win against Kingfisher in the tournament’s semifinal round.

“That dude, he just makes plays,” said Alva coach Paul Duncan. “He’s our least skilled basketball player, and it’s just all about effort, and effort, and effort, and he just makes big plays. That’s Cade.”

Reygan Martin, the tournament MVP, hit a pair of free throws after Blackwell’s 15th and final turnover to give Alva a two-possession lead, and three Blackwell three-pointers missed in the waning seconds as a full-throated Alva-faithful crowd erupted.

Alva led 4-0 early, but surrendered a 23-4 run over the rest of the first half, including a scoreless second quarter, its first of the season. Blackwell’s deliberate offense was efficient in the first two frames, hitting 10-of-15 shots and surrendering just one turnover.

Alva applied much more ball pressure in the second half, stymying Blackwell and outscoring the Maroons 35-14 after halftime.

Fairview 44, Kingfisher 42

Landon Nault scored a team-high 12 points as Fairview outlasted Kingfisher 44-42 to claim third place.

Kingfisher entered the final quarter down 38-32, but Fairview (10-3) held off the late rally to earn the narrow victory.

Kingfisher (6-3) was led in scoring by Bryce Kippenberger’s game-high 18 points.

Perry 58, Chisholm 52

Chisholm trailed 37-33 after scoring just two points in the third quarter and couldn’t recover in the final frame, losing the Wheat Capital Tournament’s fifth-place game in front of its home crowd, 58-52.

Kale Hixon scored a game-high 26 points, Shaheem Turner added 17 and Perry (9-4) outscored the Longhorns 31-22 in the second half.

Caleb Lang scored 16 for Chisholm (4-9), which visits Oklahoma Bible Academy at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Pioneer 66, Guymon 60 (OT)

Colby Koontz scored a career high 25, and the Pioneer boys basketball team overpowered 5A Guymon in overtime to secure seventh place Saturday in the Wheat Capital Tournament.

Guymon (3-9) erased a four-point halftime deficit to force overtime after the teams tied at 55-55 through four quarters, but 2A Pioneer (3-8) outscored the Tigers 11-5 in the extra session.

Arnoldo Moncado scored 21 for Guymon.

Jackson signs with Mid-America Christian
Jemarcus Jackson signed a letter of intent to play basketball on a scholarship at NAIA Division I Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City on Monday, ending a long wait for the Enid High senior, and a longer one for his nerves.
Jackson already was sweating thanks to a weighty training session just before his signing ceremony at the Enid High School food court, but that wasn’t the only reason he was “sweating like a dog” as he filled out the paperwork.

Aggies give D-II series a state flavor
A tip of the hat to Murray State College for winning the Plains District tournament this weekend to assure there will be an Oklahoma team in the upcoming NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The Aggies, who were 5-0 against Northern Oklahoma College Enid this season, beat MCC-Longview 14-7 in the district championship game to take a 41-21 record into the tournament.
They are a team that should be easy for Enid fans to adopt as their own.

Top-ranked Oklahoma is headed to the NCAA Super Regionals after run-ruling Arkansas 14-1 in a regional softball final at Marita Hynes Field Sunday.
The Sooners (50-4) will host former Big 12 rival Texas A&M, now of the Southeastern Conference next weekend in a best two out-of-three series with the winner advancing to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
