Jets sweep Connors

ENID — Xavier McClish drove the length of the court in the last 4.7 seconds to score the winning basket in Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s men’s 83-81 thriller over Connors at the Mabee Center Thursday.

No. 9-ranked NOC Enid women narrowly averted a second straight home loss by defeating Oklahoma Colle-giate Athletic Confe-rence rival Connors, 53-52 Thursday at Mabee Center.

McClish’s basket capped a strong NOC Enid comeback, which saw the Jets outscore the Cowboys 48-38 in the second half. The win put the Jets in sole possession of second place in the conference at 11-5.

The Jets trailed 43-35 at halftime.

“We just kept competing and playing hard,’’ said NOC Enid assistant Ryan Mahoney. “All 11 of our guys played hard and gave it their all. It was a great sight to watch that unfold. We never gave up. That was a great play by X at the end.’’

The Jets made six key free throws down the stretch. The Cowboys kept tying the game until McClish’s game winner.

Connors dropped to 9-7 in conference. Murray State (10-6) is up next for the Jets on Monday.

“It’s another big win,’’ Mahoney said, “but a win over Murray State would trump this one.’’

Travis Carbajal had a season-high 17 points to pace the Jets attack. Trey Cohee and McClish had 14 points, while Dalen Qualls had 12 and Connor Brooks a conference-high 11 points.

NOC ENID 53,

CONNORS 52 (W)

Connors missed three shots in the final few seconds which would have given the Cowgirls the win over the Lady Jets (24-3, 15-1).

NOC Enid, leading 53-49 with 30 seconds left, missed the front end of a one-and-one and then allowed Connors to get an old-fashion 3-point play. The Cowgirls got the ball back on a tie ball on the next posession. Connors missed three shots before NOC Enid got the decisive rebound.

“It’s not the way you want to end it,’’ said NOC Enid assistant Josiah White, “but we’ll take the W.’’

Marisha Wallace was the lone Lady Jet in double figures with 19 points. The 53 points was NOC Enid’s second-lowest offensive output of the season.

Connors led 27-24 at halftime before the Lady Jets ralllied. Justice Payne hit three key 3-point shots

“We didn’t have a whole lot of energy the first half,’’ White said. “Our girls responded well to the challenge in the second half.’’

Chelsea Bates, who had been out with a concussion, had nine points

“She did a lot for us,’’ White said. “We handled the pressure well. She drew a lot more fouls than were called. They bumped and bruised her a lot, but she did a good job of being aggressive for us.’’
