Festival to test Jets on defense

ENID, Okla. — Northern Oklahoma College Enid’s men will be looking for a little more consistency when the Jets go to the Conestoga Classic in Liberal, Kan., today and Saturday.

NOC Enid, 8-2, will play Northwest Kansas Technical College at 6 tonight and Odessa (Texas) College at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Jets are coming off strong second-half defensive performances in recent wins over Southeast Nebraska (78-76) and Northeastern A&M (79-56).

They held NEO to 24 points and Southeast Nebraska to 29 points in the second half.

“We’re still looking to put 40 minutes together of great defensive intensity,’’ said Jets assistant coach Ryan Mahoney. “When we want to play defense, we can defend, We just want to turn that into a full game.’’

Northwest Kansas Technical (4-8) has four players averaging in double figures, including three good 3-point shooters, Mahoney said.

They are averaging 78.2 points per game.

“I believe we match up with them pretty well,’’ Mahoney said.

Odessa (6-2) is averaging 92.9 points per game. The Wranglers were ranked in the top 15 in the preseason.

“They are a very talented team,’’ Mahoney said. “They have some real quick little guards to go with some size.

They rely a lot on individual talent. They try to beat you one-on-one.’’

The Jets are looking for their fourth straight win. NOC Enid has four players averaging in double figures — Jeremy Espinoza (13.6), Connor Brooks (13.6), Dalen Qualls (13.1) and Kyndall Dudley (10.5).

NOC Enid’s doubleheader with Seminole, originally scheduled for the road Dec. 6, will be played at the Mabee Center instead.

The women will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8.

Jackson signs with Mid-America Christian
Jemarcus Jackson signed a letter of intent to play basketball on a scholarship at NAIA Division I Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City on Monday, ending a long wait for the Enid High senior, and a longer one for his nerves.
Jackson already was sweating thanks to a weighty training session just before his signing ceremony at the Enid High School food court, but that wasn’t the only reason he was “sweating like a dog” as he filled out the paperwork.

Aggies give D-II series a state flavor
A tip of the hat to Murray State College for winning the Plains District tournament this weekend to assure there will be an Oklahoma team in the upcoming NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The Aggies, who were 5-0 against Northern Oklahoma College Enid this season, beat MCC-Longview 14-7 in the district championship game to take a 41-21 record into the tournament.
They are a team that should be easy for Enid fans to adopt as their own.
