NOC Enid cagers look to bounce back

ENID, Okla. — Northern Oklahoma College Enid men’s coach Greg Shamburg was not pleased after a 73-65 loss at Redlands Monday in the Jets’ Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.

The Jets went through what Shamburg called a “tough’’ practice Tuesday after the disappointing performance.

“I hope so,’’ said Shamburg on whether his players got the message. “We didn’t compete well last night. We got a little better today.’’

The Jets and Lady Jets will spend their Thanksgiving break at the Hesston (Kan.) Classic Friday and Saturday.

The women will play the Bethel College JV and the men Tabor College JV today. Both teams play Southeast Nebraska Saturday.

“They’re the least of our concern right now,’’ Shamburg said of the upcoming foes. “We have got to get better. We need to come together as a team and compete. We got a little stagnate the last week and a half.’’

The lack of competitiveness was frustrating to Shamburg, whose team came into the game with a 5-1 record.

“It’s part of the process,’’ he said. “It was not something that we expected. We thought we would be ready to go. We didn’t play like a veteran team (six sophomores). We didn’t shoot the ball well. Hopefully, that will change.’’

Dalen Qualls did have a season-high 20 points against Redlands. He is averaging 14.1 points per game. Connor Brooks is averaging 13.4 points game, while Jeremy Espinoza is averaging 12.4 points per game.

Shamburg gave his team the day off Wednesday.

Southeast Nebraska is ranked No. 19 in this week’s Division II rankings. The Storm (5-2) have some “good size,’’ Shamburg said.

The Lady Jets (5-5) are coming off a 72-57 loss at Redlands. They were outscored 38-23 in the second half.

“We just didn’t get clicking on all cylinders,’’ said Lady Jets coach Scott Morris in a postgame radio interview.

Marisha Wallace leads the offense, averaging 21.3 points per game, followed by Christa Beasler (10.5), Chelsea Bates (9.6), Rylie Swanson (9.0) and Shannon Hough (8.0).

Both NOC Enid teams return to conference play Tuesday when they host Northeastern A&M in a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
