Former Medford coach Chuck Goodner will enter the Oklahoma 8-Man Football Coaches Hall of Fame tonight a contented man.
Goodner had a 135-44 record in 14 seasons at Medford, including a state championship in 1999 before leaving last summer to become athletic director at 4A Tecumseh.
“I’ve had so many good things that have happened to me,’’ Goodner said. “I don’t have any voids to fill in my coaching career like some guys might have.’’
Goodner’s teams reached the state finals seven times and made 10 straight trips to the semifinals from 1994-2003. His last team reached the state semifinals in 2007.
“I don’t know if that can be duplicated again,’’ Goodner said. “I was fortunate to have so many kids, who not only were great athletes, but great kids as well.’’
Goodner said he was “fortunate’’ to have assistants such as David Zachary, Ross Doane, John Cope, Mike Dean and Doug Sinor whom he could built program with.
“One guy can’t do it by himself,’’ Goodner said.
The highlight for Goodner was a 64-18 win over Timberlake in the 1999 Class C championship game which concluded a 14-0 season for the James Kilian-led led Cardinals. Kilian went on to star at the University of Tulsa.
Goodner was 1-6 in title games.
“If the ball bounced the other way, we could have won a couple of more,’’ Goodner said. “But we did win it once. There’s a lot guys who didn’t get as close as we did. It’s hard just to win one.’’
The 1999 team won all four playoff games by the 45-point mercy rule.
“I really felt we would have had a good shot to win it that year even if we didn’t have James Kilian,’’ Goodner said. “He would be the first to tell you how talented the rest of the guys were. But having him made it that much easier. He was like having another coach on the field.’’
The 1999 championship was just one of many highlights for him.
He said Kilian taking a lineup that included five freshmen to the 1996 state finals was almost as big as an accomplishment. Medford upset Tipton 26-0 in the state semifinals.
“That was really something,’’ Goodner said.
A 31-22 win against a Reggie Skinner-led White Oak in 1994 in horrendous weather “you didn’t want to be standing out in, much less to play football in,’’ was his other major highlight.
Another big moment came in 1998 when Medford hosted Powers, Ore. At the time, it was the furthest a high school team had traveled to Oklahoma for a game. Medford lost 18-14.
His biggest disappointments were semifinal losses to Tipton, 27-12 in 1997 and Balko, 7-0 in 1998.
“No disrespect to Balko (1998 state champion) and Wakita (1998 state runner-up), but I’ll go to my grave knowing we had the best team that year,’’ Goodner said. “The best team doesn’t always win. Unfortunately for us, we didn’t get it done.’’
Goodner’s teams reached the state finals in his first three seasons, losing to powerful Central Marlow in 1994 and 1995 and to Waynoka in 1996. That was the first time Medford had reached the state finals since 1946.
The Cardinals reached the state finals in the three years after Kilian’s graduation, losing to Kremlin-Hillsdale in 2000, Pond Creek-Hunter in 2001 and Weleetka in 2002.
He gave “serious thought’’ to leaving coaching after the 2002 loss to Weleetka but he was determined to stay at it until his youngest daughter, Jenna graduated.
Goodner had his lone losing seasons in 2005 (2-7) and 2006 (4-6), but came back to finish at 10-3 in 2007 with a trip to the state semifinals.
“I can’t think of a better way to step out,’’ Goodner said.
Goodner said keeping track of a combined 30 boys and girls teams in the Tecumseh system keeps him busy enough not to miss coaching. The school dedicated a new football stadium last season.
“I miss the people at Medford, but I really enjoy my job,’’ Goodner said. “It’s a real challenge. I haven’t missed coaching like one would think I would.’’
He said he was honored being inducted with long-time friend Steve Hoffsommer.
“That makes it a lot more fun,’’ Goodner said.
