Sessions gets better with age

ENID, Okla. — Experience and seat time have paid off for stock car competitor Bill Sessions.

 This weekend warrior began his quest for the checkered flag nearly a quarter of a century ago at Enid Speedway in the late model division.

 Last season, this veteran scored the first championship of his career at Elk City Speedway in the pro street division and backed it up with a repeat crown this year.

“I’ve come a long way later in life,’’ said Sessions. “I may be 70 years old, but the announcer in Elk City said I drive like I’m 36. I have to admit that it feels great to beat all of those kids.’’

Watching Sessions dashing around the pits getting his son Lance’s car ready to race, I have to admit he moved like many men half his age. Sessions readily admitted that his son’s encouragement was instrumental in his success.

“Lance made me change my driving style,’’ said Sessions. “Basically, he taught me to use the whole track.  I loved to go high, but using the entire track I do better.’’

Racing is a family affair for the Sessions family.  His son Lance competes in the popular sport modified class and serves as the crew chief on his father’s team. Daughter Kiana helps get the car ready for race nights. His daughter-in-law Amy designed the lime green vinyl graphics and her company — Extreme Graphics — sponsors the fast No. 2 ride. Wife Linda faithfully roots the family on from the grandstands and is this driver’s professed No. 1 fan.

“I couldn't do this without my family help and support,’’ said Sessions. “We have had a great time at the race track over the years. I love racing at Enid and I’ve had a lot of top-10 finishes over the years, but never won a championship. I wish we could race here every week.  Enid has a great facility.’’

Sessions said at the start of the season he had not intended to run for points this year. However, when the final point night found him with a 70-point lead, the veteran pulled out all the stops to secure another series win.

“Lance told me to drive conservatively that night,’’ Sessions said. “But when I lost 10 points on the heat race, I decided to go all-in and ended up winning.’’

The Sessions family will be on hand for Enid Speedway’s Winter Nationals on Oct. 27-28. The Oct. 27 card will include qualifying heats and features for modified, sport modified, street and factory stock, along with a complete race card for pure stocks.

The Oct. 28 venue will include championship features for the above divisions, along with a complete program for late models. Gates will open at 11 a.m. both days with a 2 p.m. scheduled start for the green flag.
