On a sunny and windswept Saturday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, the Enid Plainsmen got a complete-game performance from sophomore Jerry Kearney to beat the Midwest City Bombers 8-3 in Class 6A baseball action.
The Bombers plated two runs in the first inning for an early lead, but the Plainsmen bats woke up after a four-hit performance Thursday at Edmond Santa Fe and broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more runs in the second inning for a commanding 8-2 edge.
Leaving town after the game for a long road trip to Gulf Shores, Ala., and a 33-team tournament next week during spring break, Enid needed a good performance to kick off the road trip and got it from Kearney.
“Jerry had great command of his fastball and he was hitting his spots and mixing in his changeup,” Enid coach James Peoples said. “Today, his out-pitch was his changeup. He had good location until the sixth inning when he started laboring a little bit and got tired.
“It all starts on the mound. Jerry goes out and takes command of the game and we jump on them early. We were swinging the bats well and we got some key hits.
“That was the difference in the game.”
For Enid, senior Joe Black had two hits and two RBI, junior Lawson King added two hits and two RBI and senior Blake Ferguson powered his way to two doubles and three RBI.
Down 2-0 in the first, the Plainsmen came back in a big way. Four hits and a walk paved the way for four Enid runs. Houska led off with a double, Black singled, Dillon Walker walked, King singled and Ferguson doubled in the rally.
In the second inning, Enid ran out front 8-2 after senior catcher Cedric Rose singled, Houska sacrificed, Black singled, Walker walked, King singled and Ferguson doubled again to give the Plainsmen command of the ballgame.
The dominating pitching performance by Kearney made the difference down the stretch of the game. After Enid chased Midwest City starter Jay Gibbons early, the Bombers brought in sophomore Damion Orr and he held Enid the rest of the way.
The Plainsmen open play in the Gulf Shores round robin tournament at 4:30 p.m. Monday at 4:30 p.m. against Sweetwater, Ala.
All of Enid’s games on the Alabama trip can be heard on KCRC Radio (1390 AM).
“Sometimes it is hard to play before starting a long road trip,” Peoples said. “We are about to leave and go on the road and the kids were amped up to go on the trip.
“They came out and performed well today.”
