Wildcats end Garber win streak

COVINGTON —  A 28-game winning streak for two-time defending Class B state champion Garber ended in emphatic fashion Friday night at the hands of Covington-Douglas.

The Wildcats throttled the Wolverines 54-6 in a game that didn’t even reach the fourth quarter because of the 45-point mercy rule.

“It was nice to get off to a good start,” said Covington-Douglas coach Brian Smith. “Obviously we played really well.”

The Wildcats outscored the Wolverines 32-0 in the first quarter alone.

A.J. Phillips started the scoring barrage with a 62-yard touchdown pass  from Brett Stopp.

Stopp also hit Dylan Sterling on a 26-yard scoring aerial.

Garber’s only score came in the second quarter on a 49-yard run by Jordan Avants.

Garber was able to muster only one first down the entire game.

Covington-Douglas will travel to Webbers Falls next week, while Garber will make a trip to Geary.



TIPTON 34, WAUKOMIS 14

TIPTON — Tipton pulled away from Waukomis Friday night to win 34-14.

Waukomis was tied with the Tigers, 14-14 late in the first half, but Tipton scored right before the half ended and went on to pull away.

Waukomis coach Mike Felder said quarterback Dustin Maxwell went down with an injury two minutes before the end of the first half.

“I think he’s fine, we put ice on it, but we didn’t want to take a chance,” Felder said.



TIMBERLAKE 52,

RINGWOOD 12

RINGWOOD — Defending Class C state champion Timberlake powered its way past Ringwood Friday night, 52-12.

Timerlake quarterback Coy Troutt threw three touchdown passes.  Stetson Buller had a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown as well as a 56-yard touchdown run.

Timberlake outscored Ringwood 26-0 in the first quarter.

Timberlake plays at home against Sharon-Mutual next week, while Ringwood hosts Kremlin-Hillsdale.



CHEROKEE 56,

SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN 28

CHEROKEE — Justin Schanbacher had three touchdown runs for Cherokee and Brayden Nixon added two of his own as the Chiefs walloped Southwest Christian 56-28 Friday night.

Cherokee outrushed Southwest Christian, 399-16.

Cherokee hosts Laverne next week.



WOODWARD 26, EL RENO 13

EL RENO — Casey Covalt led Woodward to a 26-13 victory over El Reno Friday night.

The Boomers quarterback completed 20 of 24 passes for 225 yards.

Woodward coach Justin Jones said fullback Mason Semmel and tailback Jacob Gilreath also had outstanding games.

Woodward hosts Garden City, Kan. next week.



OKEENE 54, FAIRVIEW 0

OKEENE — Derrick Miles scored three touchdowns Friday as Okeene beat Fairview 54-0 to open the season.

Miles took the opening kickoff back 82 yards for a score to set the tone, and the Whippets didn’t look back.

Garrett Wilson and Trent Turner also scored twice for Okeene.

The Whippets’ defense stuffed Fairview, holding the Yellowjackets to only 35 total yards. Fairvew managed just 6 yards rushing on 29 attempts.



HENNESSEY 40, NORTHEAST 0

OKLAHOMA CITY — Hennessey used a strong running game to blank Northeast 40-0 to open the season.

The Eagles ran for 294 yards and scored five of their touchdowns on the ground.

Ivan Moreno scored twice, on runs of 1 and 3 yards. Levi Hill added two more on runs of 2 and 5 yards.

Orlando Pina ran an interception back 33 yards for a touchdown as Hennessey’s defense shut down Northeast. The Vikings only managed 34 yards total offense.



KINGFISHER 35, WATONGA 26

KINGFISHER — Kingfisher used a 21-point second quarter to power past Watonga 35-26 in a high-scoring season-opener.

Landon Nault led the way for the Yellowjackets with three touchdowns on runs of 2, 2 and 27 yards. His final touchdown allowed Kingfisher to pull away after Watonga had closed the gap to 28-26.

Watonga’s scores came on big plays, including a 96-yard kickoff return by Javis Flynn and a 68-yard pass by Chris Hunter to Zac Goerke.



SHARON-MUTUAL 34,

SEILING 16

MUTUAL — Sharon-Mutual spotted Seiling the lead then came back to beat the Wildcats 34-16.

Timmy Lieswald scored twice to lead the Trojans. Weston Free threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score.

Tyler Flowers and Buster Horn scored for Seiling.



NEWKIRK 34, PIONEER 7

NEWKIRK —  Newkirk spoiled the season-opener for Pioneer Friday, defeating the Mustangs 34-7.

Pioneer will try to get on the winning side next week when it hosts Mooreland.
