Chelf earns All-State honors

ENID, Okla. — Courtney Chelf became the first Enid athlete to make all-state teams in softball and girls basketball when the senior was named to the Large West team by the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association.

Olivia Mason was named to the Small West roster after leading Fairview to the 2A State semifinals, and was joined by fellow area cagers Ashley LeGasse (Lomega), Makayla Tate (Seiling), Tiffany Rieger (Burlington), Kylee Severin (Timberlake) and Katy Starr (DCLA). Kingfisher’s Kortney Meat was listed as an alternate for the Middle West team.

After leading the Pacers with 18 points and 2.3 steals per game, Chelf affirmed her position on the team with a successful workout last week.

“When we went to the tryout, there were some really good players there, but watching the tryouts, I had a really good feeling she was going to make it,” said Enid coach Robb Mills.

“My tryout went well,” Chelf said. “It was really good.”

A four-year starter, Chelf helped lead Enid to the 6A State Tournament in her sophomore season and the Pacers averaged 14.5 wins over her career, including a 17-6 run in her final year.

Chelf earned an all-state nod after her final softball season, hitting .455 as a senior, breaking her own school record with 14 home runs. She broke two other school records — RBI (56) and doubles (13) — and had eight triples and stole 23 bases.

She also has a chance to make the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team.

“I have a feeling she’s going to make that one too,” Mills said. “But (making the OGBCA team) is the same honor to make this one as it is the other. It’s a big deal.”

Chelf has been contacted by Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Oral Roberts about playing collegiate basketball, and will start visiting schools after spring break.

“I like (the recruiting process),” she said. “I haven’t made a decision yet.”

Chelf is the latest all-state player in what has been a banner 12 years for Pacer players making the cut.

Enid had only three all-state girls basketball players before before 2001, and none from 1986-2000. Since 2001, six Pacers — Jessica Pontious (2001), Jessica Aebi (2003), Haley Downing (2005), Heather Woods (2008), Rani Melvin (2011) and now Chelf — have earned the nod, and Mills thinks the 10th all-state player in the team’s history might already be on the roster.

“Oh sure, yeah,” he said. “I definitely think there’s a possibility that some others can make it.”

The annual OGBCA All-State games are scheduled for June 1 at Westmoore High School, where the Large West team will play the Large East team and the Small West will play the Small East.

The Oklahoma Coaches Association game would be in July as part of All-State week.
