ENID —
Some quick thoughts from this past week:
• Univ-ersity of Oklahoma fans finally can rejoice.
The Sooners have beaten archrival Oklahoma State in something this academic year with an 80-71 win over the Cowgirls in women’s basketball last Saturday.
OSU had a 6-0 edge in head-to-head play going into the game, with a win in women’s basketball (66-63), men’s basketball (72-65), wrestling (25-13), football (44-10) and twice in soccer (1-0 at Stillwater and 3-0 at Norman).
OSU finished ahead of OU in both men’s and women’s cross country as well.
Sooner faithful can point out the men’s basketball (Feb. 22) and wrestling (Thursday) rematches are in Norman.
Of course, OSU men’s basketball fans can take heart in Iowa State hitting 15 out of 30 three-point attempts in a 77-70 win over the Sooners last Saturday.
If Keiton Page is hitting like that, the Cowboys could have a chance in Norman. A word of advice: pick the home team to win Bedlam.
Mark your calendars for these future Bedlam matchups — softball, March 28 in Oklahoma City, April 11 at Stillwater and April 25 at Norman; baseball, April 25 at Stillwater; May 4 at Tulsa and May 5-6 in Oklahoma City.
Nothing beats the spirit of Bedlam, especially if your team wins.
• Air Force Academy’s baseball team will be visiting OU on March 20-21. It would be nice if the Air Force had a fly over then as it did when the Falcons came to Norman for a football game in 2010.
• If you checked the results from the Oklahoma Indoor Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships last Saturday, you may have noticed some versatile athletes.
Covington-Douglas’ Quentin Thayer scored 14 points in a 46-35 loss to Garber in Skeltur Conference basketball action Feb 3 and then he turned around and won the Class A-2A high jump with a leap of six feet at the OTCA event. He was second in the pole vault with a 10-6.
Brooke Wayman, one of OBA’s girls leading scorers in basketball, was second in the A-2A triple jump with a leap of 26-73⁄4.
Cherokee’s Evan Bagenstos has been a steady contributor to the Chiefs basketball team this season. He was third in the 400 meters with a time of 56.95 seconds.
That’s the beauty of small school athletics. Sports have learned to share athletes. It’s not rare to see a football player run in a cross country meet on a Saturday after playing a game the night before.
At the Class B level, a boy or a girl can balance being on the baseball/softball and track teams. It’s almost a necessity at some schools.
It’s just nice Enid, thanks to Oklahoma Bible Academy, has the facilities to hold two indoor meets giving young athletes a chance to compete. Expect another high level of competition at the OBA Trojan Indoor games today. The only bad thing about today is some small school athletes may not be able to compete because of a conflict with the basketball playoffs.
Marc Koehn and his staff know how to run a track meet.
