ENID —
The National Football League has long been active in communities around America. One NFL program that has been in existence for over 30 years is the annual Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
This year, the NFL PP&K contest will return to Enid for the third consecutive year thanks to the efforts of H.E.S. Sports Club of Enid.
Founded in 2003 by Samuel Hill, H.E.S. (Helping Elevate Sports-manship) will host the event on Sept. 19th from 3 to 5 p.m. at the EJRT Sports Complex. The free competition is open for boys and girls in five age categories: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15.
Hill said about 30 kids came out and participated in 2009 and he hopes to add to that number in 2010 but for Hill, the numbers are not the driving force behind the H.E.S. sports programming.
“I’m happy if one child comes out and participates,” said Hill on Wednesday. “I don’t look at the numbers. The smiles we put on the kid’s faces is what I look at.
“The PP&K gives a lot of kids something to do. It’s free and they get a chance to advance to the next level.”
H.E.S. has ongoing sports programming for kids and Hill said during football, basketball and track and field, his organization saw nearly 500 kids come out and compete.
“I want these kids to have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and learn to have fun and enjoy what they have done in life and make sure they always have something to look forward to,” explained Hill. “If H.E.S. can put a positive spin on one kid’s life, then I’m on the right track.”
