ENID —
Mike Phillips has a simple pitching philosophy — throw strikes and let your defense do the work.
The Enid senior righthander walked only one while striking out five and allowing four hits in shutting out Centennial Conference foe Sand Springs 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at David Allen Memorial Ballpark on Saturday.
Sand Springs’ Alex Hackerott was equally as effective in the second game in a no-walk three-hitter as the Sandites pulled out an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings.
The split cost the Plainsmen (15-12 overall and 4-2 in conference) a chance to take the Centennial Conference lead. Stillwater (4-1) has a half-game edge over the Plainsmen.
Phillips recorded his second straight shutout. He blanked Woodward on Monday.
“I don’t think I’ve ever done that before so it feels pretty good,’’ Phillips said. “I didn’t know I had that many strikeouts. The main thing was limiting walks. You can’t defend walks.’’
Phillips benefited from a solid defense.
Shortstop Seth Floyd saved the shutout in the sixth when he relayed a throw from center fielder Joe Black to nail Blake Boone at the plate. Boone tried to score on a double by Kyler Robertson.
Third baseman Miguel Bretado robbed Zach Cordell and Drew Stiner of hits with good glove work. Left fielder Brady Baugh went to the warning track to rob Hackerott of an extra-base hit in the fifth.
“It was a pretty solid game,’’ Phillips said. “The defense usually steps up when I’m on the mound. I threw mainly fastballs. They were hitting it right to them.’’
Enid coach James Peoples said there’s a reason the defense steps up when Phillips is on the mound — he throws strikes.
“When Mike Phillips goes to the bump, he’s going to give us a chance,’’ he said. “When you throw strikes, the defense is going to be more alert.’’
Black gave Phillips all the support he would need with a two-out, two-RBI double in the second that scored Dillon Walker, who singled, and Baugh, who reached on an error.
Colter LeGrant scored an insurance run in the sixth when he doubled and scored on a two-out infleld single by Baugh.
“We had some timely hitting,’’ Peoples said.
Hackerott helped his own cause in the second game with two RBI doubles.
Nathan Boyd had a two-run double in the fourth. Justin Burgess had a solo homer in the second.
The Sandites had 11 hits. Will Simms, Trey Hunt and Stiner also had doubles.
“I would rather see them hit the ball out of the yard than have walk, walk, walk, walk,’’ said Peoples, whose team gave up eight walks in a 7-5 loss to Moore on Friday. “At least that gives the defense a chance to work.’’
The Plainsmen only had two runners reach second. Floyd had a first-inning single. Erick Ramirez and LeGrant singled in the fourth but Hackerott got out of trouble by getting Bretado to hit into a force out.
“The left-hander kept us off-balance the entire game,’’ Peoples said. “He did a good job. We couldn’t figure him out.’’
The Plainsmen will be back in action Monday when they host conference rival Ponca City at 7 p.m.
“Right now you want to win all the games you can,’’ Peoples said. “You just want to get hot down the stretch. I’m proud of the kids. We’re playing well right now. Hopefully, we can sweep Ponca City.’’
