GARBER — No. 1-ranked teams like Garber always seem to find some area to try to improve on.
Such was the case with the Wolverines Friday after Garber made Kiefer its 26th straight victim, 58-12 in a second round playoff game at Warren Dell Stadium.
The Wolverines weren’t too happy with giving up two touchdown passes to the Trojans’ Ostin Broadhead. Garber’s starters came into the game having allowed only one score.
“We don’t like giving up touchdowns,’’ said Wolverines senior Zac Powell. “We’ll get after it this week and we’ll do a lot better next time.’’
“That’s something we’re not proud of,’’ said Garber coach Mark Harmon.
Garber (12-0) advances to next week’s semifinals against B-1 rival Laverne, who beat Davenport. The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association will announce the time and site of the game Sunday.
The Wolverines more than made up on it on offense.
Garber scored on eight of its nine possessions ending the game on the 45-point mercy rule when Powell scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a 22-yard run with 11:04 remaining in the third period.
Powell also had touchdown runs of 13 and 17 yards and caught a 57-yard scoring pass from Dylan Postier.
“That was Zac’s best offensive night of the season,’’ said Harmon.
“We didn’t play as well as we can, but we made it work’’ Powell said. “The line and Cade (Oller) were opening up big holes. That’s how I got the big runs. Dylan can really put the ball on the money. We have been working on that play quite a bit.’’
Positer, despite being without senior wideout Tyler Miller, was 12 of 19 passing for 210 yards, including TD passes of 61 and 26 yards to Bryce Lamer. Postier added a one-yard run.
Oller scored Garber’s other touchdown on a two-yard run.
“We absorbed Miller,’’ Harmon said. “That threw us off a little in the throwing game, but Dylan played a very good game.’’
Postier most-talked about play came in the second quarter when he ran down a ball snapped over his head on fourth down to hit Oller on a 19-yard pass play for a first down.
Kiefer’s scores came on a 3-yard pass from Broadhead to C.J. Ashwood to cap a 55-yard, 9-play drive and a 24-yard Broadhead pass to Nick Livingston to cap a seven-play, 68-yard drive at the end of the first half.
Garber’s first-team defense has yet to give up a rushing touchdown this season.
“We played a good team tonight,’’ Harmon said. “They were a big, physical team. They were probably the best passing team we have faced this season.’’
Broadhead was only 11 of 24 passing for 138 yards. Kiefer had minus four yards rushing on nine attempts.
“We seem to still be making some mistakes,’’ Harmon said. “It wasn’t the perfect game that we were shooting for, but we played well.’’
James Semrad deflected two passes. Freshman Jordan Avants, who was subbing for Miller, had an interception.
The 58 points marked the seventh time this season the Wolverines have scored 50 or more points in a game this season.
The Laverne-Garber game will be a rematch of last year’s Class B finals won by the Wolverines. Garber beat Laverne 48-14 on Oct. 23.
