The all-time rushing list includes some big names in Enid football history — Lydell Carr, Austin Box, Richard Escoe and Jonathan Burton.

Jonathan Burton?

That’s right. After a breakout junior season, Burton is on the brink of catching — and overtaking — some of the biggest names in Plainsmen history.

Burton ran for 1,234 yards this season, which ranks fifth on the single-season list at Enid. For his career, Burton has gained 1,771 yards, just 1,555 yards away from Carr’s career rushing record at Enid.

If he stays healthy, Burton figures to have a good chance to become Enid’s all-time leading rusher next season.

What’s more, Burton is on track to become Enid’s all-time leading scorer. He rushed for 13 touchdowns this season, which gives him 23 for his career. Floyd Winfield Sr. holds the EHS record with 34 rushing touchdowns. Winfield holds the scoring record with 241 points. Burton is sixth on the all-time list with 168 points.

“He’s really a good player,’’ said Enid coach Tommy Parker. “He plays almost every down and he did all those things when everybody knew what was coming.’’

Burton was held in check for just 37 yards rushing last Friday in a 45-13 loss to Broken Arrow in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, ending the Plainsmen’s season with a 6-5 record.

“It always ends too soon,’’ said Parker. “You play and practice and work for a year and get close with the kids. It’s always a sad ending no matter how (the season) ends. This team will never be again. You can never duplicate the same team and the memories again.

“This was a fun group to coach. We had very few issues or problems. That’s a tribute to the kids.

“The way they played the game on both sides of the ball was great. They just played hard. I had several comments from other coaches about how physical our guys played.’’

Junior quarterback Alex Patterson turned in a solid season in his first year as a starter. The left-hander passed for 1,384 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. Patterson ranks in the top 10 in several passing categories.

The Plainsmen had several highlight performances, perhaps none bigger than a 35-12 victory over Stillwater, snapping a 14-game losing streak to the Pioneers.

“The Stillwater win, obviously, was big,’’ said Parker. “That ended 14 years of frustration. Against Sand Springs, nobody gave us much of a chance to win. We got back in the playoffs for the second straight year. All those things were highlights.’’

The Plainsmen lost their final two games of the season against powerhouses Tulsa Union and Broken Arrow. But the other three losses were close. Enid lost to Bartlesville by four points, Owasso by five points and Choctaw by three points.

The Plainsmen will lose 19 seniors, including standout defensive ends Chris Campbell and Que’Shaun Bennett. Other top losses will be McLain Clemens, Matt Blakley, Mark Johnson, Kaleb Hulva, Cyle Abbott, Tanner Newby, Miguel Bretado and Donnie Fuston. Tyler Barnes, who was lost for the season with a broken ankle in Week 4, also will be a key loss.
