BROKEN ARROW — Broken Arrow sophomore running back Andrew Griffin rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 3-ranked Tigers blew past the Enid Plainsmen 45-13 Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs at Memorial Stadium.

Griffin scored on runs of 16, 26 and 49 yards and Steven Hopper rushed for 78 yards and scored on a pair of short runs. The Tigers rolled up 285 yards on the ground.

Broken Arrow improved to 9-2 and advances to the state quarterfinals next week. Enid ends its season with a 6-5 record.

The Tigers held Enid standout Jonathan Burton in check, but not without effort.

Enid’s junior all-purpose player was involved in every phase of the offense, running the ball, catching the ball and even throwing the ball. He also punted and played linebacker.

Burton finished with 37 yards rushing on 21 attempts and scored on two short touchdown runs. He also caught six passes and completed a 22-yard pass.

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board in the first period.

An interception by safety William Watford on Enid’s first possession set up the Tigers at the BA 49. Nine plays later, Hopper plunged in from the 1-yard line.

A 25-yard Enid punt against the wind set up the Tigers for their next score. After taking over at the Enid 28, the Tigers needed just five plays to score as Griffin dashed up the middle for a 16-yard score early in the second period.

The Plainsmen had their backs to the wind in the second period and took advantage right away.

Alex Patterson hit Donnie Fuston over the middle for a 38-yard gain to open the drive. Patterson connected with Dillon Collums for 17 yards on a key fourth-and-9 situation. Burton then completed a 22-yard throw-back pass to Patterson to the 2-yard line. Two plays later, Burton got the Plainsmen on the board with a 1-yard dive, capping an impressive 11-play, 84-yard drive.

The Tigers responded with a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive on their next possession that ended with Griffin’s weaving 26-yard touchdown run that put Broken Arrow in front 21-7 at intermission.

Broken Arrow recovered Enid’s onside kick to open the third period and marched 51 yards to get on the board again on Hopper’s 2-yard run.

The Tigers recovered a fumble by Burton at the Enid 48 to set up Carl Salazar’s 36-yard field goal against a stiff wind.

Broken Arrow went up 38-7 early in the fourth period on Archie Bradley’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Schroeder, then scored again on Griffin’s 49-yard burst.

The Plainsmen used some razzle dazzle to score their final touchdown. Burton took a handoff from Patterson then pitched back to Patterson, who hit Fuston for a 63-yard gain. Burton scored on the next play when he reversed his field and scored from the 5 yard line.

The loss brings to an end the 2009 season for the Plainsmen, but the campaign included several milestones.

The Plainsmen reached the playoffs in consecutive seasons and beat Stillwater for the first time in 14 seasons
