Oklahoma Bible Academy celebrated a few firsts Friday night at Commitment Field.
First playoff appearance.
First home playoff game.
First 10-win season.
But the biggest of all was first playoff win as the seventh-ranked Trojans shut out high-powered Oklahoma Christian School 7-0 to advance to the second round of the Class A playoffs next week at Cordell, a 48-20 winner over Maysville.
“Once again, our defense kept us in the game and won it for us,” said head coach Todd Kuykendall after his Trojans blanked the Saints, the first time OCS had been shut out this season. “Time and time again we had some big plays.”
Perhaps the biggest play of them all came early in the game, on OCS’ second possession when Richard Mooers pounced on a loose ball at the OBA 9 to kill the Saints’ best scoring chance of the night.
The Saints had driven to the OBA 3 following a short Trojan punt before turning the ball over.
Mooers’ name turned up several more times on big plays for OBA’s defense.
He ended OCS’ first drive of the game when he sacked Jack Warren for a 10-yard loss on a third-and-5 play from the OBA 39.
He caused a fumble when he hit Jeff Smith on OCS’ first drive of the second half. Harrison Jackson recovered at the OCS 49. Mooers had another sack to kill another drive in the second half, dropping Warren for a 17-yard loss on a fourth-and-8 play from the OBA 34.
“Before the game, I challenged our men to be difference makers,” Kuykendall said. “Our defense was that difference maker.”
OCS came into the game averaging 37.9 points a game.
The only points of the game came with 3:57 left in the first half.
A short OCS punt into a strong south wind set OBA up on its 49.
Seven plays later, Aaron Beagley burst up the middle to score on a 15-yard run. The Trojans got a big break when OCS was called for a 15-yard pass interference penalty, giving OBA the ball at the OCS 18. Beagley scored two plays later.
That really was OBA’s only scoring chance of the game. The Trojans did manage to get to the OCS 20 on their first drive of the second half, but they failed to convert on a fourth-and-1 play.
“A win’s a win,” Kuykendall said of his team’s offensive effort, which generated just 131 total yards.
With their passing game grounded, the Trojans relied on the legs of Jackson for most of their offense. The senior running back gained 99 yards on 29 carries. Beagley finished with 21 yards.
Smith paced OCS with 79 yards on 19 carries.
