EHS faces old coach in playoffs

When he was a freshman at El Reno High School, Tommy Parker watched the Enid Plainsmen and head coach Ron Lancaster win the 1983 state championship.

Tonight, he will square off against the longtime coach in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs when Enid takes on Broken Arrow.

“Coach Lancaster is a heck of a coach. Luckily, it comes down to the players and making plays,’’ said Parker, who has led the Plainsmen to the playoffs in each of his two years as a head coach.

Tonight’s winner at Memorial Stadium in Broken Arrow advances to the quarterfinals next Friday against the winner of the Midwest City-Putnam North game.

“It’s do or die now,’’ said Parker. “You win or you go home. This is the greatest time of the year, the playoffs.’’

Speculation is this will be the final season for the 68-year-old Lan-caster. It would conclude a remarkable high school coaching career. Lancaster, now in his third season at Broken Arrow, enters tonight’s game with a 301-92 record with two state championships.

Lancaster won 78 games — and the 1983 state championship — as Enid’s head coach in 1983. He also won a state title at Jenks.

Former EHS head coach Craig Simmons also is on the Broken Arrow staff.

“We’re good friends with those guys,’’ said Parker. “We have a lot of respect for them and they are good people.’’

Lancaster has a talented ballclub this season that includes running back Steven Hopper, who became the school’s all-time leading rusher last week. Hopper, who has orally committed to Houston, now has gained 2,356 yards in his career at BA. This season, Hopper has rushed for 840 yards and nine touchdowns.

Quarterback Archie Bradley, a transfer from Muskogee, has passed for 1,105 yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions.

“Defensively, we have to stop the run,’’ said Parker. “They run the ball well. It’s going to be a big task and we have to play extremely hard.’’

The Plainsmen have a talented duo at running back and quarterback as well.

Tailback Jonathan Burton has rushed for 1,206 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Burton, just a junior, ranks fifth all-time in rushing yards at Enid. He is only 19 yards away from overtaking Joe Poslick for fourth on the all-time list. Burton ranks in the top 10 in seven offensive categories.

Quarterback Alex Patterson has passed for 1,165 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions this season.

“Offensively, we have to execute and run the football and be physical,’’ said Parker. “We also have to execute in the passing game.’’

The Tigers opened the season with a 17-6 loss to Tulsa Union, a team that defeated Enid 31-6 last week.

Broken Arrow’s only other loss was a 42-24 setback against top-ranked Jenks.

Enid is making its second straight playoff appearance.

Last year, the Plainsmen were bounced in the first round against Jenks.

Parker said Enid is not preparing much differently this week than in any other week.

“By Week 11, everything goes a little quicker in practice,’’ he said. “You have your offense and defense in. It’s more a time to polish things.’’

Game notes: Burton’s older brother, Jeremiah, played two seasons at Broken Arrow before the Burton family moved to Enid. ... Broken Arrow long-snapper Rowdy Harper has committed to Houston. ... Enid strong safety McLain Clemens recorded 18 tackles last week against Tulsa Union. Burton had 13. ... Tigers wide receiver Ronnie Price was featured on ESPN’s Top 10 plays earlier this year when he hurdled a would-be tackler from Tulsa Washington. ... Enid is plus-11 in turnover margin. ... Enid is 4-5 in the career series against Broken Arrow. The last win over the Tigers was a 40-13 victory in 1991.
