Deer Creek-Lamont has opened up the Class C playoffs against Midway the last two years.
Both times, DCLA has prevailed.
The Eagles, third in District C-3, will go for a third consecutive playoff-opening win against Midway this Friday. The Chargers finished 6-4 and second in District C-4 this year. Two of their losses came against two Class B teams, Wetumka and Porter.
David Zachary, head coach at DCLA, says the Chargers’ record doesn’t indicate how good they actually are, because of those losses to Class B teams.
“They’re not really big, but they’re really fast,” said Zachary, “and they’ve got some big linemen.”
On offense, Zachary says Midway runs a lot of quarterback sweeps and power plays, so his defense has to be prepared for a lot.
The Eagles can put up plenty of points too — they put up 92 points in a game against Kremlin-Hillsdale earlier this season.
Zachary says his offense is ready to match Midway’s.
“We can score a little bit when everyone’s put together and healthy and everything,” he said.
If DCLA wins, they’ll likely play Shattuck in the second round. But Zachary doesn’t want to get his players caught up on looking ahead to Shattuck.
“If we don’t play well Friday night, we’ll get beat,” he said.
Two other regional Class C teams will see playoff action this Friday.
Seiling will be at home and face 8-2 Sasakwa. Seiling’s only loss this year was against undefeated Timberlake.
Sasakwa got bounced in the first round of the playoffs last year by Timberlake.
Waynoka also made the Class C playoffs at 7-2, and will go to Temple to face the 9-1 Tigers. Temple defeated Waynoka last year, 32-30.
The winner of Waynoka-Temple will play the winner of the Sasakwa-Seiling game.

Thunder up football fans
