CHS looks to go out on winning note



Chisholm, 2-7 overall and 1-7 in District A-1, will be trying to end the season on a high note at Mooreland (1-8, 1-7).

“They probably recognize we’re only 2-7 and they have a chance to win their last game, too,’’ said Chisholm coach Joey Reinart. “They will be fighting for the same things we are.’’

Mooreland has lost six straight games since a 19-13 overtime win at Hooker Sept. 18.

Chisholm has lost five straight since a 54-20 win over Hooker Sept. 25. A win would give the Longhorns a winning record (3-2) on the road. The Longhorns are coming off a 38-0 loss to No. 3-ranked Hennessey Friday. CHS failed to score after being inside the Eagles five twice.

“In the last two or three weeks, we have showed signs of coming around as far as competing and working hard for four quarters in a game,’’ Reinart said.

Mooreland has only one senior on its roster. Junior Cody Kenny has shown big play capabilities. He had a 59-yard punt return for a score against Pioneer.

“They have a lot of young guys,’’ Reinart said. “Coach (Dwight) Mincher will be able to eventually mold this team like he wants it.’’

PHS seniors bid farewell against OBA



Six Pioneer seniors will be playing the last game of their varsity football careers tonight when the Mustangs (3-5, District A-1 and 3-6 overall) host Oklahoma Bible Academy (7-1, 8-1). Riley Benda, Bubba Dorsey, Spencer Regina, Haden Hedges, Josh Henderson and Nathan Isaacs will be recognized before the game.

“It’s going to be hard to replace those guys,’’ said Pioneer coach Ron Sunderland. “They have been a big part of our team for a long time. They have helped us make the transition from 8-man to 11-man.’’

Pioneer will try to come back from a 53-34 loss to Beaver Friday. The Dusters scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth period to overcome a 34-31 third-quarter deficit.

Hedges had a 75-yard touchdown run, a 92-yard kickoff return and caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Derek Gabriel.

“We played well for three quarters,’’ Sunderland said. “We had a couple of breakdowns and we couldn’t hold on.’’

Sunderland said a win over OBA would give the Mustangs momentum for 2010.

“It gives you a good feeling,’’ he said. “It helps you in the weight room during the off-season.’’



OBA has respect for 3-6 Mustangs



Oklahoma Bible Academy (7-1 in District A-1 and 8-1 overall) will be treating Friday’s regular season finale at Pioneer (3-5, 3-6) as a playoff game.

The Trojans clinched second place in A-1 Friday with a 53-7 rout of Mooreland. OBA will host the third place team from District A-2 (Oklahoma Christian School or Luther) next week.

“We don’t want to lose to Pioneer and possibly have some doubts about us going into the playoffs,’’ said Trojans coach Todd Kuykendall. “It would be huge for us to carry some momentum into the playoffs.’’

Kuykendall welcomes an emotional game after easy wins over Mooreland and Hooker (48-12) the last two weeks. The 53 points against Mooreland was a season high for the Trojans.

“”We need more of a challenge,’’ Kuykendall said. “We still have a lot of work to do and there’s a lot of areas we need to improve on.’’

Pioneer’s Haden Hedges will be a challenge to bring down, Kuykendall said.

OBA’s defense and special teams were “offensive’’ against Mooreland. Richard Mooers scored on a 21-yard fumble return and Jonathan Sturgeon scored off a blocked punt.

Running back Harrison Jackson has scored 18 TDs.

Felder pleased with Waukomis’ effort



Waukomis coach Mike Felder said it won’t be to the Chiefs advantage to be playing at No. 3-ranked Canton tonight a week after the Tigers lost to defending state champion Garber 38-6 for the District B-1 title.

“All year it seems like Garber beats up on them and when we face them the next week, they are mad because Garber beat up on them,’’ Felder said.

The Chiefs, 2-5 in District B-1 and 2-7 overall, go into the game on a positive note. Felder was pleased with his team’s effort in a 40-14 loss to defending state runner-up Laverne last week. They trailed only 18-14 early in the fourth quarter.

“We played with a lot of heart,’’ Felder said. “I hope we can get the same thing this Friday night. We’re going to give it our best shot. If we fight as hard as we did last week, I’ll be pleased with how we finish up. We’re looking forward to the challenge.’’

Freshman back-end Tyler Terral returned to the lineup Friday and had a good game, Felder said.

“This will help him get ready for next year,’’ Felder said.

Quarterback Dustin Maxwell, playing at about 85 percent because of injuries, had several good runs.

“He’s getting back to his old self,’’ Felder said.
