On any given down, Kaleb Hulva might be in a three-point stance at defensive end, crouching to make a tackle on a running play or shuffling his feet to get into pass coverage.
“He’s the hybrid,’’ said Enid High School defensive coordinator Jon Claborn. “He’s the neutralizer to all the spread offenses we see.’’
As the outside linebacker in Enid’s defensive scheme, Hulva has numerous responsibilities.
“Kaleb has to know every level of the scouting report,’’ said Claborn. “We ask him to do a lot of things. It’s a difficult defensive position to play, but we’re really pleased with how he’s played. He’s improved all year.’’
Hulva and the Enid defense will be tested on Friday when they host No. 2 Tulsa Union at D. Bruce Selby Stadium.
So far this season, the 6-0, 190-pound Hulva is among the team leaders in takeaways — two caused fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception.
He also has three tackles for losses and one crushing sack against Yukon.
After John Burton graduated last spring, the Plainsmen were looking to fill that outside linebacker spot. Several candidates competed for the position.
“There was a question for us (coaches) last spring about that position,’’ said Claborn. “And even going into the season we didn’t know for sure. But Kaleb earned the spot and he’s kept it.’’
Hulva was a special teams player as a sophomore and got more playing time last season before becoming a full-time starter this year.
Hulva said Friday’s final home game will be special, especially against the mighty Redskins.
“We’re capable of beating them,’’ he said. “We’re ready to shock the world. Nobody outside this fieldhouse believes we can do it. But we’ve had a good season and did some things. We are going back to the playoffs, we have had two shutouts in a row and we beat Stillwater. We could add another (accomplishment) by beating Union.’’
Hulva is considering his options for football after high school. He said there is a chance he will sign with Baker (Kan.) University for next season.
Greybeards to tailgate before game
Enid Greybeards will have a tailgate party from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. on Iowa Street Friday before the Enid-Ponca City football game.
Club members will be serving a burger or hot dog basket with chips, cookie and a drink for $5.
Proceeds will benefit the EHS football program.
