How good was Deer Creek-Lamont’s offense against Kremlin-Hillsdale Friday?
The Eagles allowed 42 points in the first half and still were ahead by 36 points (76-42). DCLA eventually pulled out a 92-42 mercy-rule win in the third quarter.
“I’ve never been involved in anything like that before,’’ said DCLA assistant coach Michael Thompson. “I told (Eagles head coach) Dave (Zachary) that I’ve never seen a game where you had to give the stat man an IV. He just about cramped up from all that scoring.’’
Kremlin-Hillsdale, in a losing effort, had 417 yards of total offense, including 396 yards passing. DCLA had 523 yards rushing and 55 passing.
The Eagles had 54 second-quarter points. The Broncs scored 28 points.
“It was a really weird, different kind of feeling,’’ Thompson said. “I didn’t realize there had been that many points scored. It was a pretty decent game when you were watching it.’’
The Eagles didn’t set out to score more than 90 points. Both teams have small rosters, which made it difficult to substitute.
“It was one of those perfect storms kind of deals,’’ Thompson said. “We’re scoring and they were scoring. We just got in the flow.’’
DCLA scored on 12 of its 13 possessions.
Derric Richards had 199 yards rushing on nine carries and scored three TDs. Connor Kirby ran for four TDs.
Quarterback Lawson Thompson ran for one score and threw for another. Backups Landon Tingley, Patrick Swaggart and Jace Whitehead scored the other TDs.
DCLA is averaging 60 points a game, having scored 42, 52, 56 and 58 points the first four weeks.
Richards, Tingley and receiver Levi Reese were on the 400-meter relay that finished third at the state meet a year ago.
Richards, Thompson said, “doesn’t know how quick and elusive he can be. His first three steps are pretty quick.’’
Ross, a wrestler in the offseason, has matured physically and is quicker.
“He’s such a hard-working kid,’’ coach Thompson said. “If he doesn’t get it done it’s not for a lack of trying.’’
Reese, who caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Thompson, might be a victim of DCLA’s powerful running game. He has six TDs on 10 receptions.
“We haven’t been in a position to have to throw the ball a lot,’’ said coach Thompson.
Lawson Thompson, only a freshman, has been a solid replacement for 8-man All-Star quarterback Eli Reese.
Thompson has run for three TDs and thrown for six scores. He’s thrown only one interception. Coach Thompson said his son is handling the pressure well of being a coach’s son.
“I’m proud of him both as a coach and a parent,’’ coach Thompson said. “Being only 14 he’s gone through some growing pains, but the first five weeks has given him an opportunity to get more confidence and to gain respect from people around him.’’
The offensive line of guards Patrick Swaggart, Kolton Schuelein and Chad Mendenhall, center Kayl Tingley and ends Reese and Hunter Whitehead has been solid.
Swaggart is a good enough athlete to be the team’s backup quarterback. Mendenhall has come back from a broken arm to be a dominant physical player up front.
The other three learned well from being thrown into the lineup a year ago.
“They have come a long way,’’ said coach Thompson. “They are bigger and more physical and they understand more about what they are trying to do. That more than anything else has made a difference in what we have done.’’
The schedule, though, gets tougher. The 5-0 Eagles, ranked No. 3 in Class C, have gone through the easy part of their schedule. Their first five opponents have a combined record of 5-20.
The Eagles travel to No. 5-ranked Seiling Friday.
The Wildcats are coming off their first loss of the season — 52-6 to No. 2-ranked Timberlake.
“Each week brings a different challenge,’’ said coach Thompson. “You just have to prepare every week and try to get better. It’s not like we can do a lot of new things. We’ll see if we can move the football and try to stop them a few times.’’
Seiling has 36 players out, almost more than double the 19 DCLA has out. The Wildcats’ depth has allowed Seiling to use two different lines.
“That’s a luxury to have,’’ said coach Thompson.
