ENID —
Enid pitcher Mike Phillips didn’t care Edmond Santa Fe rested five starters Friday night when the Wolves traveled to David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Beating the state’s No. 2-ranked team 3-1 was special for the Plainsmen right-hander, who allowed six hits while striking out seven and walking none in his varsity home finale.
“It’s Edmond Santa Fe,’’ Phillips said. “They’re going to be good no matter who’s out there. It’s good to go out on top as a senior.’’
Phillips, known for his craftiness, was effective with a new slider pitch that assistant coach Dennom Sullivan has been working with him on.
“It just has a little movement on it,’’ Phillips said. “They couldn’t touch it.’’
The pitch came through for Phillips at the right time. Santa Fe, down 3-1, had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth. Phillips fanned Jackson Matthews and Connor Costello to end the inning.
“I had a lot of confidence in my slider,’’ Phillips said. “It kept them off balance and they swung and missed.’’
Enid head coach James Peoples called the performance “one of the best games of the year.’’
The Plainsmen will take a 17-13 record to Jenks at 5:30 p.m. today in the regular season finale.
“Beating a quality team like this is going to give us a lot of confidence,’’ said Peoples, whose team plays Midwest City on Wednesday at the regional tournament at Owasso. “Hopefully, we can get hot down the stretch.’’
Phillips was emotional to win his last home game.
“It means a lot to me,’’ he said. “It was a good win for us. It was a solid game.’’
All three of the Plainsmen runs were unearned. Santa Fe’s Clayton Blackburn, who pitched the last three innings, had seven strikeouts.
“We wanted to play some guys who haven’t played a lot to get them ready for the playoffs,’’ said Santa Fe coach Lonny Cobble, whose team fell to 31-4. “Our plan was to give Blackburn two or three innings of work.’’
Jordan Lopez, who has signed with Texas Tech, was one of the five starters to sit out. He has missed a week with a “tweaked’’ hamstring, Cobble said.
Miguel Bretado, with one out in the second, doubled, went to third on an infield single by Dylan Walker and scored on a passed ball.
Brady Baugh, in the third, singled, advanced to third on two infield outs and scored when Erick Ramirez reached on an error.
Colter LeGrant doubled to open the fourth. He went to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and scored on a Walker groundout.
Santa Fe spoiled Phillips’ bid for a third straight shutout in the fifth. Brady Newville singled, went to third on a single by Dalton Schmidt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dylon Sturges.
“That was my fault,’’ Phillips said. “The guy got a hit off a bad pitch.’’
Enid center fielder Joe Black robbed Schmidt of a hit in the seventh with a shoestring catch.
