PONCA CITY — —
Enid starting pitcher Miguel Bretado was his own best friend in the Plainsmen’s 6-1 win over arch-rival Ponca City Tuesday.
Bretado drove in four runs on a two-out two-RBI single in the first and a two-out two-RBI home run in the fifth as the Plainsmen came back from Monday’s 6-3 loss to the Wildcats.
Bretado, in four and two-thirds innings, allowed three hits while walking seven and striking out seven in getting his first win of the season.
Reliever Lawson King picked up a save, allowing only one hit over two and two-thirds innings. He did not walk a batter. He came in with the bases loaded with two outs and got out of the jam with a popup.
The Plainsmen, who committed six errors Monday, did not allow an error Tuesday.
“I’m in a lot happier mood tonight,’’ said Enid coach James Peoples, “The kids showed a lot of character in how they came back tonight.
“Miguel Bretado pitched well and that was Lawson King’s best outing of the season. He came in a tough spot and got out of it. That’s going to give him some confidence down the line.’’
Bretado opened the scoring by singling in Brady Baugh, who had had walked and Joe Black, who singled, in the first to make it 2-0.
Ponca City left 11 runners on base. The Wildcats’ lone run came in the second on a double and three walks.
Enid made it 3-1 in the third when Seth Floyd reached second on an infield single and an error and scored on a bloop single by Erick Ramirez.
In the fifth, Ramirez drew a two-out walk and scored on Bretado’s opposite field home run, his third of the season.
The Plainsmen concluded the scoring in the seventh. Baugh was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a double by Floyd.
Enid, 16-13 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference, will host Edmond Santa Fe at 7 p.m. Friday in the final home game of the season. The Plainsmen will visit Jenks at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
