You only have to lead the last lap to win and that is just what Joe Adams did to post his sixth win of the year aboard his Platinum Racing-sponsored Kraft car in modified racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

Mark Smith hurried off the outside pole and looked to be the man to beat.

Jon Herring Jr. spun in lap 11 to put the race under caution. Smith raced away from the field, locked in a heated battle with his teammate Adams.

Adams won by a few feet at the finish. Smith held onto second, followed by Dusty Robbins, Jim Ciampi and Allen Chickering.

Mark Willson found track conditions to his liking as he piloted his Big O Tire/Mid America Wholesale-sponsored limited modified to victory lane for the fourth time this season.

“We got a little lucky tonight and missed the wrecks,’’ said Willson. “The track was really racy on the top and bottom.’’

Earl Whitley exploded off the outside pole for the early lead. A caution waved the second time around for a six-car pile-up in turns three and four. Whitley picked up where he left off when the green flag waved.

Jesse Canaan spun the next time around to bring out another caution. Whitley raced away on the restart and had a strong lead when another yellow flag flew in lap 11.

Jason Gerhard took control on the restart, only to see another caution wave when Logan Macy came to a halt in the groove. Willson used a daring low challenge to take the lead when the race went green as Gerhard faded off the pace.

Willson pulled away from the field — and with a clear track in front of him — was unstoppable on his path to the checkered flag. Randy Miller, Earl Whitley, Greg Deterding and Nick Shenberger rounded out the top five.

Jerry “The Warrior’’ Derr continued his dominance in street stock as he piloted his Tools Plus/R & R Rental/Leon Motorsports street stock to the winner’s circle for the fifth time this season.

“The car was awesome tonight,’’ said Derr.

Pacesetter Derick King showed the way, only to see a caution for a two-car pile up the first time around. King continued his run when the race went green with Derr in hot pursuit.

It was a drag race for several laps as the duo raced side-by-side. Derr found the quick way around in lap nine and boasted a 10-car length lead when King spun and brought out a yellow flag in lap 13. Derr continued his run on the restart and never looked back.

Jon Herring Sr. posted second, trailed by Mike Isom, Ryan Bohnstedt and Wesley Kruckenberg.

John Whitley was in the right place at the right time and picked up his fifth feature win of the year aboard his Farmer’s Transportation/Applied Construction factory stock.

“Things worked out in my favor we missed a couple of crashes and got a couple of yellow flags at the right time,’’ said Whitley.

James Mayhugh launched his ride off the outside pole and sported over a straight-away lead in a mere two laps. His luck ran out in lap 11 when his rear end broke and sent his car off the front straight.

Brandon Gibson inherited the lead, but his glory was short lived as he tangled with Brad Costello on the back straight and put the race under caution.

Whitley hurried away when the race went green and took a commanding lead to the finish line. Ronnie Ramer captured second, followed by David Fisher, Damon Seiger and Costello.

Kenny Adams dominated in pure stock as he put his Platinum Racing-sponsored ride in the winner’s circle for the first time this season.

Dustin Schoonover raced off the front to take the early lead. His luck ran out in lap nine when Adams took the point with a daring outside charge.

Despite a late race caution, Adams was never challenged. Schoonover settled for second, followed by Tim Smart, James Goldman and Michael Meek.

Earl Whitley, Ricky Austin, Gerhard and Deterding won their heats in limited modified. Smith claimed the win in modified.

King and Jon Herring Sr. were heat winners in street stock. Factory stock heat winners were Ramer, Whitley and Gibson, Meek and Smart took honors in pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park’s next card of racing will be at 7 p.m. Saturday.
