Chisholm rallies past OBA

Chisholm moved the football throughout the first half, but critical stops by the Oklahoma Bible Academy defense gave the Trojans a slim lead at halftime Friday night at Longhorn Community Stadium.

“We felt we could’ve been ahead 21-0 (at halftime),” said Chisholm coach Dan Maly. “But give them credit. They came up and pop-ped the ball up.”

The Trojans forced two turn-overs and stopped Chisholm two other times inside the 40 to take a 7-6 lead at intermission. That’s when Will Barney and the Longhorn running game took over the second half.

Barney, who had two fumbles in the first half, ran for 144 of his career-high 228 yards in the second half. The Chisholm junior finished with three touchdowns as the Longhorns rallied for a 21-14 victory.

The win moved Chisholm to 2-3 on the season and gave the Longhorns their second-straight win in Class A-1 district play. OBA fell to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in district play.

Chisholm set the tone early in the second half, scoring touchdowns on its first two drives.

The Longhorns marched 72 yards on 14 plays on their first drive. Barney had a pair of critical catches, the second grab resulted in a 17-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Jason Gillpatrick.

After forcing a three-and-out from OBA, Chisholm scored again. The Longhorns needed just five plays to march 84 yards, highlighted by a 66-yard run from Barney. Barney scored from seven yards out to give the Longhorns an 18-7 lead with 1:12 left in the third quarter.

“We saw some things running the football we could do,” Maly said.

A majority of those things involved Barney. Barney had 29 carries for 228 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He also finished with two catches for 34 yards.

“I knew I would have to come in and establish the run game,” Barney said.

The Longhorns tacked on a 31-yard field goal from Bryant Jackson to take a 21-7 lead with 8:12 left in the fourth quarter.

But OBA, which had struggled offensively for most of the second half, answered with a scoring drive of its own. The Trojans marched 54 yards in seven plays. Robert MacDonald capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 21-14.

The Trojans drove into Chisholm territory on their next drive. But OBA’s comeback bid ended when Gillpatrick intercepted counterpart Chris Kuykendall with 1:22 left.

Gillpatrick was 8-of-16 passing for 181 yards. Kuykendall finished 12-of-28 for 72 yards.

OBA’s defense was a key reason the Trojans held a 7-6 halftime lead. David Rogers recovered a Barney fumble on Chisholm’s first series of the game. Harrison Jackson recovered Barney’s second fumble.

Chisholm’s second turnover led to OBA’s first score. Tank Mulanax scored on a 16-yard run early in the second quarter. Mulanax finished with 54 yards rushing to lead the Trojans.
