Cosart leads League City to win
Jarred Cosart has signed with Missouri, and his performance Thursday was a good indication why NCAA Division I school considers him a big-time prospect.
The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 13 in six strong innings, leading League City (Texas) to a 13-4 victory over Jonesboro (Ark.) in the first game of the American Legion Mid-South Regional Tournament at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Cosart’s fastball topped out at 94 mph on the stadium radar gun, and the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder used it effectively. In one stretch, he fanned six straight batters.
Cosart withstood a bout of wildness in the top of the third inning when he walked three batters. He was hurt by a couple of errors, including one of his own. Jonesboro (37-10) scored four unearned runs in the inning to tie the game.
Cosart allowed only two hits, including a bloop double to right by Cade Lynch in the sixth inning.
Eric Cantrell pitched the final three innings for League City (33-7), allowing no runs on one hit.
Cosart, League City’s No. 2-hole hitter, helped himself at the plate with a sacrifice fly.
League City’s James Wooster smacked an opposite-field, three-run homer to left off Jonesboro’s Jacob Lee in the third inning. Wooster also had an RBI single in the first inning.
League City blew the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on just two hits. Chris Narvaez had a two-run double to left and Jordon Lenaburg, who had three hits, had a run-scoring double to right.
