Locals sweep tennis titles

Saturday was a red-letter day in Enid junior tennis.

Local players captured all eight championships at the Chick-fil-A Enid Junior Open at Oakwood Country Club and Ninth Street Courts.

Eliza Fike won both the Girls 10-Under and 12-Under championships.

Other winners were Gabrielle Dick, Girls 14s; Mackenzie Zaloudek, Girls 16s; Jack Snodgrass Boys 12s; Owen Fike, Boys 14s; Devin Glasgow, Boys 16s; and Daniel Martinez, Boys 18s.

“I don’t think we have done that since I’ve been here,’’ said Oakwood Country Club pro Jim Shaughnessy. “It helped to have a (Missouri Valley Tennis Association) futures tournament in Norman this weekend, but I’m still proud of all the kids.’’

Shaughnessy hopes the successful weekend will lead to bigger things, beginning with next weekend’s Missouri Valley Sectional Tournament.

“This is what we have been practicing for all year,’’ Shaugnessy said.

Martinez moved up three age groups in winning the 18s. The 12-year-old beat No. 1 seed Christian Pearson, of Oklahoma City, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the semifinals and Kole Melton, of Oklahoma City, 7-5, 6-3 in the finals.

“It’s kind of tough to win the 18s, when you’re 12,’’ Shaugnessy said.

Martinez, who had battled illness at the beginning of the summer, has been playing up, at least one age group, all summer. Shaugnessy wants him to be in a position to qualify for nationals in his first official year of 14s.

“He’s a national caliber player,’’ Shaughnessy said. “He can beat anybody short of the top 75 in the 12s.’’

Eliza Fike beat Savannah Blasi, 6-2, 6-1 in the Girls 10s finals and was 2-0 in the round-robin 12s.

“She’s a lot like her brother (Owen) and sister (All-Stater Emily),’’ Shaughnessy said. “She’s a hard worker.’’

Dick, who was unseeded after moving up an age group, beat Lauryn Sullins, of Perry, 6-2, 6-1 in the 14s finals.

“We call her the coyote because she’s always chasing the roadrunner (her sister Alexandra),’’ Shaughnessy said. “She’s getting a lot more wins.’’

Mackenzie Zaloudek, the No. 1 seed, beat unseeded Alexandra Dick, 6-1, 6-1 in the 16s finals.

Snodgrass, Owen Fike and Glasgow held up their No. 1 seeds in their age groups.

Snodgrass beat Zachary Gwin, 6-4, 7-5 in an all-Enid 12s finals. Fike beat Ponca City’s Alexander Yozzo, 4-1, retired in the 14s finals. Glasgow beat Griffin Hullender, of Edmond, 6-1, 6-3 in the 16s finals.
