Seng hopeful about Worrell’s chances at state

Chris Worrell will be going for some individual glory when he tees off at 8:08 this morning at the Class 6A state boys golf championships at Oklahoma City’s Lincoln Park West course.

Worrell qualified as an individual at last week’s regionals at Ponca City. He will be playing 36 holes today and 18 Tuesday.

Worrell will take a 72.4 stroke- per-round average into the tournament. He won both the Enid and Guthrie invitationals this spring.

He was second at the Centennial Conference and Ponca City tournaments and was third at Stillwater.

Worrell has not had a round over 77 this season.

“He’s been playing real well,’’ said Enid coach Tom Seng. “I think he’s going to have a chance this week.’’

Worrell, Seng said, “is very familiar’’ with the Lincoln Park layout. The par-71 course suits his game well.

“They have big greens there, so he’s going to hit a lot of greens,’’ Seng said. “It’s going to come down to whether he can hit some putts. The greens are fast. He’s been putting well.’’

The winning score, Seng said, should be around even par.

Fairview will be defending its 2A championship at Sugar Creek Canyon at Hinton today and Tuesday. The Yellowjackets won a rain-abbreviated state tournament there last year.

The Yellowjackets are coming off a regional championship at Meadowlake Golf Course last week.

Logan Herbst, the 2006 champion and Ryan Coppock are expected to compete for medalist honors.

Fairview and Alva will be teeing off at 8:23 a.m., beginning with their No. 5 players.

Four area individuals are in the field — Buffalo’s Jordan Hudson and Cimarron’s Zac Novostad tee off at 8 a.m., followed by Ringwood’s Clayton Cunningham at 8:08 a.m. and Laverne’s Kale Crocker at 8:15 a.m.

Kingfisher will tee off at 8:23 a.m. today at the Class 3A state tournament at Cimarron Trails in Perkins. Woodward will tee off at the same time at the Class 4A state tournament at Oklahoma City’s Trosper Park.
