Macy continues family tradition

Many young boys daydream about being an astronaut, a fireman or a cowboy, but Logan Macy always wanted to drive a race car. His dreams became a reality when he climbed behind the wheel of his first mini stock in 2000.

When I was a little kid I hung out with my dad (Gary) and grandpa (Dewayne Bohnstedt) in their shop and told my grandma (Kate Bohnstedt) that someday I would race, said Macy.

Macy is continuing a family tradition as he embarks on his freshman season in the popular limited modified division aboard his StarTek sponsored No. 3. His grandfather, grandmother and father all were racing legends during their respective times driving No. 3 cars.

His grandfather Dewayne started competing in the late 1940s in Iowa and Nebraska, before reigning on the Garfield County Fairgrounds track, where he won several championships.

Macys father Gary dominated in late models, pro stocks and modifieds. He became a track favorite and celebrity known as Gary The Hammer Macy. This young driver also has a number of uncles and cousins who have competed or still race on the legendary high-banked track.

My family meets in the shop every weekend to help get everyones cars together for Saturday night, said Logan Macy. Ive worked in the shop since I was a little kid. They have helped me since I raced my first mini stock. After winning a championship in 2001 I decided to move up to factory stock, then street stock and modified.

According to Macy, the economy lured him into the limited modified division this season.

This class is a little cheaper to run, said Macy. But, like any other class, you have to spend the money if you want to run up front and do well.

Macy and his father built this years ride from a bare Dirt Performance chassis. He is very excited about picking a corporate sponsor on his season debut in one of Enid Speedway Parks most popular divisions.

StarTek of Enid is sponsoring me this year and I want to thank them for picking me up and helping me so much this year, said Macy. John Bossa and Midstates Oilfield Machine out of Oklahoma City take care of motor and A-Ton Engine and Clutch of Hennessey help us out a lot.

Gary Macy heads up the team as crew chief and is assisted by Macys cousin Michael Meek, uncle Rick Bohnstedt and cousin Ryan Bohnstedt.

My dad works on the car every night, said Macy. If it werent for him, I wouldnt be out here today.

This dedicated competitor kicked off the season in his sharp ride late in February at Texas Motor Speedway in the Texas World Dirt Championship.

It was three days of pure racing, said Macy. We made the main even all three nights and my dad and three cousins were a lot of help.

Macy said he plans to keep racing as long as he can. According to this enthusiastic driver, his biggest fans include his wife and children Matthew, Macee, Jena, Juliana and Lorissa.
