With the score tied at a touchdown apiece, it was a scrambling pass by Jenks quarterback Mark Ginther to wide receiver Tramaine Thompson that helped the Trojans surge past the Plainsmen going into halftime.
The Plainsmen’s defense broke through the tough Jenks offensive front, but couldn’t catch Ginther as he rolled out left with two Plainsmen hot on his heels before flipping a pass to Thompson in the end zone.
The 9-yard pass to Thompson capped a 10-play drive for 69 yards for the Trojans.
“Mark (Ginther) made a really good play when he scrambled around and found me in the back of the end zone,” Thompson said. “We knew we had to come out and make big plays from the beginning of the game.
“I feel like we moved the ball very well when we came out.”
The touchdown and extra point by kicker Matt Hulse put head coach Allan Trimble’s team ahead 14-7 with less than 35 seconds left in the half, forcing the Plainsmen to take a knee before entering the locker room at the midway point.
“We started this last November when we lost in the first round,” Thompson said. “We came back this year, we worked all summer getting up at 5 a.m. every day to here and it paid off. Everything paid off that we worked so hard for.”
Jenks’ relentless offense continued putting points on the board after the half. A third-quarter 5-yard run by Ginther with 5:19 to play doubled Jenks’ lead.
A 6-yard pass from Ginther to tight end Brad Regal in the fourth quarter, with the extra point from Hulse, capped Jenks’ three-touchdown victory over the Plainsmen.
