Plainsmen pound MWC 14-0

OWASSO — Enid coach James Peoples had reason to smile after the Plainsmen’s 14-0 rout of Midwest City in the first round of a Class 6A regional baseball tournament Wednesday.

The five-inning knockout allowed Enid to save some pitching for today’s 4 p.m. winners bracket showdown against defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Owasso.

Enid starter Christian Lafontan was able to depart after three innings and only 54 pitches. He allowed only one hit while walking one and striking out five.

Lawson King completed the shutout by allowing only a hit and two walks in the final two innings.

“Lafontan set the tempo for us on the mound,’’ said Peoples, whose team raised its record to 18-14 with the victory. “It’s all about throwing strikes. When that happens, everybody stays off their heels and focuses on the field.’’

Peoples is undecided whether he will pitch right-hander Mike Phillips or left-hander Lafontan against the Rams, who have ended Enid’s season the last two campaigns.

Owasso is expected to throw ace Dylan Bundy, who has been clocked in the 94-95 mph range. Peoples said he pitched Lafontan Wednesday “because he recovers quicker.’’

“He did a real good job today,’’ Peoples said.

Peoples said he and his staff will discuss who will match up better with Bundy.

“We’ll have to go out and play another clean game,’’ said Peoples, whose team did not commit an error. “We’re going to have to get some timely hits off Bundy. We’ll do whatever it takes to win.’’

The Plainsmen pounded out 15 hits against three Midwest City pitchers, scoring one in the first, five in the second, seven in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Shortstop Seth Floyd was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. He scored twice.

Brady Baugh was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Erick Ramirez was 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Joe Phillips was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Haden Houska, his courtesy runner, scored twice. Joe Black was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

King had an RBI single in the fourth. He scored twice. Miguel Bretado had an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the fourth.

Every Plainsman starter reached base at least once as EHS had its highest scoring output of the season.

“The kids responded well after the bad loss to Woodward Monday,’’ Peoples said. “We were really swinging the bats well.

“It’s very important in the regional tournament to start off like that. That gave us a chance to get Lafontan out early.’’

Baugh, who had been playing left field, was used as the DH for the first time Wednesday. King got the start in left. Peoples said he will keep that lineup today.

Owasso (33-5) opened the tournament with a 20-1 win over Oklahoma City U.S. Grant.

Grant and Midwest City were playing the late game Wednesday.

The EHS-Owasso winner will play the Grant-Midwest City loser at 6:30 tonight in an elimination game.
