Jets split with Mavericks again

TONKAWA — — No one won’t say the Northern Oklahoma College Jets weren’t consistent in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

For the seventh time in 10 conference doubleheaders, the Jets split Saturday with archrival NOC Tonkawa, winning the first game, 14-2 and losing the second, 6-2.

The Jets will finish fifth in the conference with a 9-11 record. They are 35-21 overall, going into the regional tournament which opens Thursday in Bartlesville.

NOC Tonkawa finishes the conference season at 2-18.

“It’s wearing on us a little bit,’’ said Jets assistant coach Scott Mansfield about another split. “That’s baseball. We’re showing a little bit of character about it. That’s one plus out of it.’’

The two games were a contrast of each other.

NOC Enid, in the opener, scored a run in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh in matching their highest scoring output of the season.

In the second game, the Jets managed only six hits off freshman J.K. Waldman, who struck out three and walked three.

The top of the Jets lineup — J.R. Head (2-for-4, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored), Brandon Ruiz (3-for-4, 2 runs scored, 5 RBI) and Christian Faulkner (2 of 4, 1 run scored, 4 RBI) combined to go 7-of-12 at the plate with six runs scored and 12 RBI in the first game..

Ruiz had a triple while Faulkner had his eighth homer of the season.

“They did what they were supposed to do,’’ Mansfield said. “If they get on, it’s sets up everyone else to have success.’’

In the second game, the trio was 1-for-10 at the plate with no RBI and no runs scored.

“That’s baseball,’’ Mansfield said. “If your top of the order doesn’t get on, it’s going to be hard to get going. It shouldn’t always be that way, but it happens. Their kid threw a lot of strikes and kept us off balance. In baseball, you can look great one game and 20 minutes later, they can shut you down.’’

Justin Sheets got the win in the first game, allowing four hits over four innings. He struck out five, did not walk a batter and allowed two runs.

Hayden James allowed only one hit in two innings of relief. He struck out one.

“Justin threw well,’’ Mansfield said. “We wanted to get as many people work today. Hayden came in and threw strikes.’’

Logan Glasgow was 2-for-3 with two RBI. He scored twice.

In the second game, the Mavericks blew the game open with five runs in the fourth.

Kyle Callahan had the Jets’ lone RBI in the sixth. Blake Callaway was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Logan Bradley scored the Jets’ other run.

Colton Wade and Ricky Reeves both had two RBI for the Mavericks.

Tyler Dean, who had shut the Mavericks down for the first three innings, ended up giving up five hits and five runs in taking the loss. He struck out three and walked one.

Enid’s Dylan Nave was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the first game and was 1-for-4 with a run scored in the second game.

Enid’s Miguel Bretado was 0-for-3 the first game but was 1-for-2 the second. He scored twice.

Aggies give D-II series a state flavor
A tip of the hat to Murray State College for winning the Plains District tournament this weekend to assure there will be an Oklahoma team in the upcoming NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The Aggies, who were 5-0 against Northern Oklahoma College Enid this season, beat MCC-Longview 14-7 in the district championship game to take a 41-21 record into the tournament.
They are a team that should be easy for Enid fans to adopt as their own.
