Plainsmen earn split at Alabama tournament

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 2011 Gulf Shores Classic baseball tournament kicked off Monday and the Enid Plainsmen (4-3) earned a split, winning 13-2 over Sweet-water, Ala., and losing 7-6 to Baldwin County, Ala., in the nightcap.

In the first game, Enid jumped on Sweetwater early to take a commanding 13-0 lead after three innings. The Plainsmen pounded out 13 hits in the win.

Junior Haden Houska, senior Joe Black and junior Lawson King continued their hot hitting and senior Dillon Walker showed signs of waking up at the plate, picking up three hits against Baldwin.

“We played well,” Enid coach James Peoples said.

“We took care of our business and our kids showed up and played well early.”

In the second game, Enid trailed Baldwin 4-3 but a three-run sixth inning put the Plainsmen up 6-4 going into the bottom of the inning. Baldwin, considered by many to be one of the best prep baseball teams in Alabama, strung together a walk, a fielder’s choice, a strikeout, a single, a 2-run triple and a 1-run single to regain the lead 7-6 and held on in the top of the seventh for the win.

“They have a great ballclub,” Peoples said of Baldwin. “They kept us off-balance with their pitching and they played great defense.

“They got that big, two-out hit in the sixth that tied the game up.

“We made a real good run and I am proud of this team.

“It just got away from us. We have to find a way to win the one-run games. I have confidence in the team and we’ll only get better.”

The Plainsmen will be back on the diamond today at 10 a.m. against Brookwood.

Enid must win its final two games against Brookwood and Catholic, Ala., on Wednesday to advance to the finals on Thursday.

“We have to go out today and figure out a way to win,” Peoples said. “Brookwood has a real solid club and they will give us all we want. We have to play well to win.

“We have to win two in a row. We have to take care of our business and those things we can control to be in there on Thursday.

“We’ll figure it out. We’ll find a way.”
