Dick wins No. 2 title at Jenks

JENKS, Okla. — Enid’s Gabrielle Dick, a state runner-up at No. 1 doubles as a freshman, made a statement she’s more than ready to up to singles.

Dick, the No. 4 seed, beat the No. 1 (Edmond North’s Jaci Smith, 6-4, 6-2) and No. 2 (Jenks’ Jenny Bond, 5-7, 6-0, 10-2) on her way to winning the No. 2 singles title at the season-opening Jenks girls tennis tournament Saturday.

Dick’s second place finish help Enid finish second in the team competition to Jenks (59-52). Tulsa Kelley (49) and Edmond North (48) were third and fourth.

“She was super,’’ said Enid coach Darrell Herndon. “Those really should help her seedings. And it was good to get the Kelley girl (Valene Brookover) knocked off (6-0, 5-7, 10-6) in the second round.’’

Enid was second at both No. 1 (Kathryn Dillingham and Alex Dick) and No. 2 (Savannah Blasi and Madison Blevins) doubles.

Dick and Dillingham lost to Jenks’ Piper Huey and McKinleigh Lair, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 in the finals. Blevins and Blasi lost to Jenks’ Alix Williams and Decker, 6-1, 6-2.

Blevins and Blasi were virtually playing for the first time together. Blasi just reported last week from basketball.

“We know who are competition is now,’’ Herndon said. “It takes only one time to beat somebody at state.’’

Alexis Blasi was eighth at No. 1 singles, losing to Olivia Charvat of Metro Christian, 6-2, 7-5.

“That was a very tough No. 1 division,’’ Herndon said.

Lulu Ruding, playing unattached, won the consolation championship at No. 2 singles.

“It was as good as day as you could have without outright winning the team championship,’’ Herndon said. “I was very pleased with how we played. Some of those matches could have gone either way. It looks like it’s the same four teams (Jenks, EHS, Edmond North and Kelley) that are going to compete for the state championship. Jenks holds all the jokers now, but we can take a shot at them on a given day.’’

The Acers will go to the Union March Tournament Monday where they will see many of the same teams.
