ENID —
The cold, hard reality of playing 6A baseball against the upper tier of ranked teams in the state’s highest classification hit home Friday night in the form of the top-ranked Broken Arrow Tigers (25-1).
The Tigers paid a visit to the Enid Plainsmen (11-17) at David Allen Memorial Ballpark and handed the Plainsmen their worst defeat of the season in a 20-1, five-inning rule-rule blowout.
Amassing 19 hits against five Plainsmen pitchers, the Tigers batted around twice in the game and scored six runs in the first, two in the second, nine in the fourth and three in the fifth. Enid committed five costly errors and badly misplayed a pop fly that only added to the onslaught.
Enid picked up its only run in the second inning on a Lawson King double down the left field line and a RBI single by senior catcher Cedric Rose.
Tigers shortstop and lead-off hitter Tyler McKInzie led the hit parade for Broken Arrow with a grand slam home run in the fourth and a two-run homer in the fifth.
Designated hitter Jacob Evans added a three-run round-tripper in the first inning when his line drive shot bounced off the top of the wall in right field. Every hitter in the Broken Arrow lineup had at least one hit.
“Those guys can play,” Enid coach James Peoples said. “That’s why they are ranked No.1. They aren’t ranked first for nothing. They can really swing the bats and they proved it today.”
The Tigers are averaging nearly nine runs a game and their only loss of the season came on March 16 when Winter Haven, Fla., beat them 7-3 in the Blue Devil Classic during spring break in Florida.
“It all started when we walked a guy in the first and misplayed a flyball,” Peoples said. “They got the momentum going and we just couldn’t stop them.”
The Plainsmen play at Lawton Eisenhower in a 1 p.m. doubleheader today.
“Tomorrow is another day,” Peoples said. “The sun is coming up tomorrow and we will go out and fight. We need to sweep Lawton and we are capable of doing that.”
Sophomore Jerry Kearney will pitch the first game and King will get the ball in the nightcap.
“A sweep would give us some confidence but we have to go out and get game one first,” he added. “We have to figure out how to win the opener and hopefully, that will carry over to the second game.”
Enid will return home Monday against Ponca City at 7 p.m. and travel to Ponca City Tuesday for another 7 p.m. start.
NOTES: The Plainsmen learned of the pairings for the regional tournament. Enid will be on the road at 2nd-ranked Owasso in a field that includes Tulsa Union and Bartlesvile ... Seniors Dillon Walker and Joe Black have committed to play at Rose State College in Midwest City. “That is a good deal for them,” Peoples said. “I am very proud of them for being able to play at the next level.”
