ENID —
Enid Pacers (14-7) withstood a miserable offensive first half Friday night against Lawton Eisenhower (7-12), but that’s why they play two halves a game.
Trailing 24-13 at intermission, the Pacers knocked down 34 points in the final two quarters to beat the Lady Eagles, 47-45 on a Haven Bay layup after a steal as time expired in regulation.
Courtney Chelf had 21 points in the win followed by 13 from Abby Lee and nine from Bay. Crystal Polk netted 19 for Ike.
“It was a great win after such a horrible start,’’ Pacers coach Robb Mills said. “You have to give the girls credit for fighting back and having such heart.’’
The Eagles prevented an Enid sweep in the boys varsity game, 41-38.
Mills said he could see the slow start coming after a big win over Stillwater on Monday.
“It has been that kind of week,’’ he said. “I was afraid of this. I’m just proud of how much heart they had coming back.’’
In the third quarter, Enid came out shooting and attacking much better, tying the game at 30-30 with 2:08 remaining.
Ike came back with a 5-4 run to lead 35-34 going into the final stanza.
In the final stanza, Enid eased out front 44-42 with 1:33 left .
With 14 seconds to play, Ike got a 3-point bucket from Jordan Roy to lead 45-44. Five seconds later, Grace Enmeier made the front end of a one-and-one free throw to tie the game with 10.6 seconds left.
After an Ike timeout, Lady Eagles guard Adrieanna McCrary reached midcourt with her dribble when Bay swooped in from her left, knocking the ball free and scrambling for the winning layup at the buzzer with McCrary all over her.
“I told the team at halftime, the third quarter was ours,’’ Mills said of the 21-11 surge. “Now the fourth quarter is ours. These girls played their hearts out.’’
IKE 41, ENID 38 (B)
In the nightcap, the No. 10-ranked Eagles held on for a three-point win over the Plainsmen in another nailbiter.
“I thought we played well,’’ Plainsmen head coach Ryan Wilkinson said. “We did a good job of taking away their high-low action.
“We had a couple of opportunities there at the end, but couldn't get it done.’’
Ike utilized the charity strip in the final 1:11 to keep Enid at bay, converting five tosses to close the game. With 1.9 seconds left in regulation, Mitchell Foote (nine points) dropped in a basket to trim the Eagles' edge to 41-38.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Ike surprisingly threw the ball in the stands to give the Plainsmen one final opportunity. Senior Marvin Elmore got the final shot call to tie the game, but his off-balance 3-pointer from the deep right wing glanced off the rim as time expired.
At intermission, the homestanding Plainsmen trailed 21-20. The Eagles outscored EHS 20-18 after intermission.
“We are playing with a lot of confidence,’’ Wilkinson said. “We are recognizing what teams are trying to do and going out there and playing much better as a team rather than individuals.’’
