MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — First, Taylor Mendell kept No. 2 Lomega in the game, then she kept the Lady Raiders’ season going.

Mendell scored 28 points including the game-winning free throw with 3.9 seconds left, and second-seeded defending champion Lomega edged seven seed Leedey 63-62 in two overtimes Thursday in the Class B State quarterfinals at Carl Albert High School.  Northwest Oklahoma’s other two entries weren’t as fortunate as No. 1 Hammon eliminated DCLA 34-30 and Erick beat Timberlake, 41-40.

No. 9 Leedey took an 11-10 lead after one quarter and raced ahead 22-11 after back-to-back threes from Jessie Harrel capped an 11-1 run to start the frame.

But Mendell answered with an 11-0 run on her own, hitting two straight threes, three of four free throws and finally a steal for an easy layup to pull Lomega even at 22 by intermission.

Harrell scored eight of her 19 in the third quarter as Leedey took leads of 27-22 and 38-32, but Ashley LeGasse answered with seven of her 22 in the frame and Lomega narrowed the margin to 39-37 after three.

Senior Sydney Harrell tallied seven of her team-high 20 in her final game and scored with 20 seconds left to put Leedey up 53-52, but Mendell split a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to even the game at 53, and Sydney Harrell’s jumper at the buzzer missed to send the game to overtime.

Each team scored just two points in the first extra period, and Lomega held the ball for the final minute to set up Mendell’s game-winning free throw that held after Jessie Harrell’s desperation halfcourt attempt fell short to end the game.

Lomega (23-6) advances to face Hammon in the semifinal round 6 p.m. at the  State Fair Arena for a chance to play for a state-record 12th title. Leedey’s season ends at 20-8.

ERICK 41, TIMBERLAKE 40

Kylee Severin’s shot off her own missed free throw missed its mark at the buzzer and the Timberlake Lady Tigers’ season came to an end with a tough 41-40 loss to Erick.

The Lady Tigers battled from behind the entire contest and did not take their first lead until the 2:10 mark of the fourth quarter when Ami Adkisson hit a pair of free throws to give Timberlake a 39-37 lead. But its lead was short-lived as Erick’s Mackenzie Kelly hit a three-pointer to give Erick a 40-39 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Timberlake was forced to foul late and Erick hit one of two free throws to go up 41-39. Severin was then fouled with four seconds remaining, but made only the front end of her two free throws and Erick survived with the 41-40 victory.

Timberlake twice battled back, including erasing an eight-point 29-21 deficit in the third quarter, but each time the Lady Tigers came back, the Lady Bearcats were able to respond.

The loss ends No. 5 Timberlake’s season at 23-4. Senior Bailee Clift ends her career with a strong outing, scoring a game-high 18 points. Ami Adkisson added nine points, followed by senior Kayla Castle with five points.

No. 8 Erick (23-8) moves on to face Shattuck in the semifinals today.

HAMMON 34, DCLA 30

Peyton Walker started the offense for top-ranked Hammon, and Kori Barrios finished it, as the Lady Warriors rallied in the fourth quarter to nip No. 12 Deer Creek-Lamont 34-30.

Eighth-seeded DCLA rode an 8-0 third-quarter run to take a 24-19 lead spurred by six points from senior Katy Starr in the frame. Barrios scored four straight to narrow the deficit to 24-23, and after DCLA took a 28-27 lead in the fourth, Barrios hit a jumper, then finished an easy layup after stealing the ball on the ensuing possession to put Hammon up, 31-28.

DCLA scored only once over the following five minutes, and after a pair of Barrios free throws put Hammon up 33-30, Jessica Blanton missed a deep three with four seconds left.

Walker, who scored 12 of her game-high 18 in the opening quarter, hit a free throw with 1.5 seconds left, prompting DCLA coach Chad Hutchison to put in senior Haley Stacy, who couldn’t play with a torn ACL, but would finish her career on the floor after the substitution.

Starr finished with 15 points in her final game and Blanton added 12 for the Lady Eagles, who finished 21-8, having now lost in the Class B State quarterfinals for the third straight year.

Barrios scored 10 of her 14 after halftime for Hammon (26-4).
