Gale sets new ACU, LSC records

ENID, Okla. — Abilene Christian quarterback Mitchell Gale, of Alva, had a fitting end to his career in the Wildcats’ 24-12 win at Incarnate Word Saturday.

Gale was selected as the Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week after completing 25 of 36 passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns — 87 to Charcandrick West and 80 to Darian Hogg.

Gale is the career leader for both ACU and the conference in passing yards (12,109), total offense (12,177), pass completions (931) and attempts (1,483).

Abilene Christian also became only the third school in NCAA history to have back-to-back starting quarterbacks to throw for more than 12,000 yards in their careers. Billy Malone, Gale’s predecessor, threw for 12,012 from 2005-08. Houston and Hawaii were the other two schools.

Gale finished with 18 300 yard-plus passing games, second best in ACU history behind Malone’s 20.

For the season, he completed 228 of 380 passes for 2,982 yards and 21 touchdowns.

“He would like to continue his career,’’ said Gale’s father, Steve, the athletic director at Alva. “Some scouts have rolled through to look at him.’’

The younger Gale has been invited to some December all-star games.

“He’s weighing his options,’’ Steve Gale said. “We’ll see how things work out.’’
